DURING Reading

Fill in the following items for EACH CHAPTER/SCENE as you read. Remember that academic reading is done slowly and thoroughly.

Summary – write a 5+ point summary that encapsulates the ENTIRE chapter/scene in your own words. You may use bullet points. Be sure you have summarized the beginning, middle, and end of the chapter/scene. Record page/line number(s) for each summary. Connect notes to plot terms.
Characters – identify each main character in the chapter/scene. Record TWO+ details about each character. Include page/line numbers. Update notes as the story continues, i.e. notes from multiple pages. / Inferences – for each character on the left, record TWO+ inferences. Inferences are NOT FACTS. Inferences must include explanations: John Smith seems to be . . . because ...
Setting – record TWO+ setting details for the chapter/scene. Physical + temporal = required. You may move beyond those into the emotional/ psychological, too.
Literary Devices – identify and record THREE+ literary devices. Cite each quote. / Literary Device type and explanation – answer how?andwhy? for each LD.
My Questions – record THREE+ questions as you read (reference a page/line number from which your question came). Focus on analytical questions that move beyond the superficial, i.e. Why is Romeo disappointed with Juliet’s decision? NOT What does Romeo think when he sees Juliet? Questions should not be answerable with simple facts.
Vocabulary – record FIVE+ words/phrases that are new or challenging to you as you read. Include the full quote (context) and a proper citation for each. / Vocabulary Definitions – during or after reading, look up and record the contextually appropriate definition of the word/phrase to the left.

AFTER Reading

  1. Write down 1+ evidence-based predictions for the next chapter. Include in your prediction what evidence you are using. I predict that Romeo will begin to ostracize his friends because ...
  2. Write 1+ THEME(s) that are universal, debatable, complete sentences (no “you” or “your”), and supportable by evidence.
  1. Write 2 THESIS statements for this text. Theses must contain a main topic, position, and 2 preview points that are supportable by 2+ specific, unique examples each.
