Honors BiologyUnit 9: The Central Dogma

Name ______Date ______

Graded DNA Timeline Activity

Objective: Create a timeline that represents the chronological events and experiments that contributed to our knowledge of DNA.

Materials:

- Three 8 ½ by 11 sheets of Xerox paper

- Colored pencils

- Ruler

- Tape

- Scissors

Procedure:

  1. Research each of the scientists listed below. Determine the year of their experiment or contribution. Write a one sentence caption describing the contribution they made to the study of DNA. Find or create a sketch of either the scientist or of their experimental set up.

Oswald Avery

Britten

Erwin Chargaff

Franklin and Wilkins

Frederick Griffith

Hershey and Chase

Arthur Kornberg

Levene

Gregor Mendel

Meselson and Shahl

Nirenberg

Watson and Crick

  1. Tape three pieces of 8 ½ by 11 inch computer paper together.
  2. Use a ruler and make a bold line through the middle of all three pieces of paper. This will be the line for the timeline. Mark the dates on your scale PRIOR to the placement of the scientists and their discoveries. Using your knowledge of the dates and contributions of the scientists above, create a scale that starts with the year of the earliest discovery and ends with the year of the latest discovery. Draw arrows from the correct time period for each scientist and label your timeline with the name of each of the scientists.
  3. Next to the name of your scientist, write the one sentence caption describing what contribution they made to the study of DNA.
  4. Under the caption, place your picture or sketch of the scientist or of their experimental setup.
  5. Make sure that your name is on the back of this assignment.

Grading Rubric 25 Possible Points

Each category has a possible scale of 0 – 5. A description to earn a 5 is provided.

5 / 0
Scientists
Contributions and Experiments / All “12” scientists contributions and experiments are correctly explained
Timeline Accuracy / All scientists are placed correctly in the chronological order and each scientist has the correct year representing their experiment.
Timeline Directions Followed / Three pieces of 8 ½ by 11 inch paper taped together. A bold line is drawn across the middle of all three pieces of paper. A scale is provided with a starting year and ending year.
Timeline Organization and Neatness / Timeline is neat, organized, and easy to read. All scientists are connected appropriately with an arrow. A picture or sketch of the scientist or their experiment is located near the scientist name on the timeline.
Timeline Complete / Each scientist on timeline has an accurate and correct caption and a picture of either the scientist or a picture of their experiment.
