President’s Push #23
Warren Needham. President, Hong Kong Society of Rugby Football Union Referees.
Greetings.
It’s been a while since I put a President’s Push out there(April 10). While the regular league season has finished, there has still been a lot of rugby going on with domestic and international duties to be done. Congratulations to Tobi (Sth Korea v Japan), Dewi (Philippines v Japan and Chinese Taipei v Kazakhstan) and Gabby (A4N Women’s tournament) on their ARFU referee appointments. Tobi, Dewi, Gabby Matt, and myself also had A5N ARduties. Congratulations also to Dougie and Les on their ARFU CMO and CC appointments of which there are so many I can’t list them all here.
Congratulations also to Russ Harding and Peter White on their first ARFU CC appointment at the Women’s A4N. Dawn Isaacs has also been very active on the CCing front over the past month.
Congratulations to Matt Rodden who was awarded Referee of the Year, which was presented at the Union dinner last Friday. He was one of many members considered but his Premiership debut this season, his meteoric march up the grading ladder and his selection on the ARFU High Performance Referee Panel (HPRP) highlighted the great strides he has made this season.
Congratulations to Dougie who was awarded the Joel Dunn award for services to Rugby at the Union dinner last Friday. This is a very prestigious award in the HK Rugby community. Dougie was in Sri Lanka at the time as CMO for the Sri Lanka v Philippines match so our VP Peter White accepted it on his behalf and Matt very courageously guarded it with his very life as he ran the Wan Chai gauntlet after the dinner.
I congratulated Patrick in the last ‘Push’ on his appointment as AR for the Junior World Trophy U/20s, which was held at HKFC from April 7 to 19. A huge vote of thanks to everyone who helped out at the JWT. Major events like this would not be possible without the Society’s involvement. Again we showcased the depth of expertise that we have in the Society which allows us to so successfully run the officials side of big tournamets.
Excom welcomed our new National Referee Manager Hugh Watkins to his first meeting last week. We decided on a few dates. Please put these in your diaries NOW!!!!!

Hugh is the contact person for information regarding the workshop.
At the General Meeting last night we held a vote to decide who would be our representative to contest the Director of Laws and Referees position when it comes up to be voted upon at the HKRFU 2015 AGM. We decided to do this now so our candidate will have a full year to consult with the HKRFU voting members to give them the best chance to see the qualities that a referee can bring to the position. John Findlay and Peter White published their manifestos to the Society membership last week and they gave short speech at the meeting and then opened the floor for questions. Ricky had received a number of proxy votes prior to the meeting and after the members present at the meeting voted, Peter Whiteemerged as the winner. The vote was very close.
Bernard will be leaving Hong Kong soon and we intend to give him a huge farewell. Tobi is looking at celebratory options and we will be disseminating information about that soon. Former Society president Martin Dewick and his lovely wife Sheila are also leaving our shores soon to return to Blighty. More information will be coming out regarding the dinner and other farewells soon so keep your ear to the pitch.
If your on the pitch, toot well and enjoy.

CAB Report
Les Millard, Chairman, Coaching Advisory Board (CAB),HKSRFUR
While referee watching has taken a back seat in Hong Kong there has been a lot of discussion with the unions referees department to determine their roles and relationships with CAB. We have come to some good agreements with Hugh that we think will be sustainable in the future and to benefit our society members.
In discussion with Hugh we are forward planning workshops for IRB accreditation. To this end make sure that any certificates for completing IRB L1 or L2 courses are sent to Hugh so he can update the database. A large number of society members will need reaccreditation which should be done every 3 years as a matter of course. This will men there will be a lot of you involved in courses by the beginning of the new season. More on this will come later.
We are looking to increase the size of CAB and CABEx. There are members who are wanting to step into the coaching role as they look at new directions in rugby. We are always happy to welcome those with a lot of experience into the CAB fold. Again courses are planned to this end.
See you at the AGM whistleblowers!
