Homework 7 SPSS problems:

Use the “HW7data” link on the 340 homepage to open the dataset you’ll need for this problem. The data includes many variables, but we’ll focus on examining the relationship between sexual harassment at work, ethnic minority status, and work satisfaction. Specifically, you’ll need to run a 2-way ANOVA to examine the main effects of harassment group (‘shgrp’ where 1=harassed and 0=not harassed) and ethnic minority status (‘ethmin’ where 1=ethnic minority group and 0=non-minority) on work satisfaction (‘worksat’ where higher numbers indicate more satisfaction). You’ll also need to examine the interaction between harassment group and ethnic minority status to determine whether the impact of one variable on work satisfaction depends on the second variable.

Use your in-class example and handout as a guide to perform this analysis. Your DV will be ‘worksat’ and your fixed factors will be ‘shgrp’ and ‘ethmin’. Remember to choose “Options” and ask SPSS to ‘display means for ‘shgrp’, ‘ethmin’, and ‘shgrp x ethmin’. This will give you tables of means to help you interpret any significant effects. Finally, you may want to ask for a plot of the interaction in case it turns out to be significant. You can do this by choosing the “Plots” option, choose either ‘ethmin’ or ‘shgrp’ to be on the horizontal axis and choose the other variable (whichever you didn’t specify on the horizontal axis) to create separate lines  then remember to click ‘Add’ or you won’t get the plot!

b)Is there a significant main effect of ethnic minority group on work satisfaction? Indicate the statistics that give you this information.

c)Is there a significant interaction between harassment group and minority status on work satisfaction? Indicate the statistics that give you this information.

d)Interpret and summarize the findings from parts a-c above. What do your results tell you about the relationship between harassment, minority status, and work satisfaction? Under what conditions do we observe the lowest or highest levels of work satisfaction?
