Two day hoist prescription workshop: AOTI members €180 / €280 for non members

Ceiling track hoist prescription: AOTI members €90 euro /190 non members

Hoist Prescription: This two day workshop takes a holistic approach to manual handling risk assessment and prescribing hoists. Therapists are equipped with the skills to identify the factors to consider when recommending a manual handling routine and to undertake a comprehensive risk assessment balancing creativity and risk. High level skills in negotiation are explored to facilitate an efficient and effective assessment managing expectations of stakeholders. Participants identify when a hoist is/is not clinically justified by exploring contemporary manual handling procedures and alternative equipment available on the market. When a hoist system is justified, the workshop takes a practical problem solving approach enabling participants develop a systematic approach to recommending a hoist system including the hoist, spreader bar and sling. Contemporary manual handling skills related to hoists and slings will be revised and participants will use these to develop a safe, as well as efficient, manual handling procedure. The workshop is tied together by providing a framework to clinically justify hoist selection.

Learning Objectives:

1.Justify when a client needs “a” full lifting mobile hoist system / a)  Identify the components involved in the decision to commence using a hoist system
b)  Identify the steps in negotiating a hoist to the care giver and receiver in their environment
c)  Identify how to trial specific alternative transfers to a hoist transfer in a safe and efficient manner
d)  Utilise a risk assessment framework to identify why a hoist system is needed for care giver and receiver
e)  Recognise the practical process of trialling a hoist transfer in the home environment
2. Justify when a client needs “this” hoist system / a)  Describe the parts of full lifting mobile
b)  Identify the dimensions of full lifting mobile hoists needed to achieve a suitable outcome for the care giver and receiver in their environment
c)  Prescribe a full lifting mobile hoist system in a systematic manner
3. Document a clinical justification for a full lifting mobile hoist system / a)  Consolidate learning to document the need for a hoist and this hoist for the care giver and receiver in their environment using an occupational and risk assessment framework
4. Demonstrate how to “use” the full lifting mobile hoist system effectively and efficiently / a)  Demonstrate foundation manual handling skills involved in hoist and alternative manual handling procedures
b)  Demonstrate hoist specific manual handling skills
c)  Demonstrate the creative use of equipment used in the manual handling environment balancing creativity and risk

Ceiling Track Hoists 4th December: This one day workshop builds on frameworks in the Hoist Prescription Workshop ‘Mobile hoists and alternative equipment’ to explore ceiling track hoists including a cost benefit analysis of the ceiling track systems versus floor based systems. Participants explore the steps involved in the installation of the system, including the tracking and the motor, as well as the interaction with stakeholders throughout the process. The concept of management versus rehabilitation will be explored, applying the risk management framework, to further broaden the application of the ceiling track hoist system in the home. The systematic prescription and use of standing hoists is addressed and bed mobility will be examined in depth including the use of slide sheets.

Learning Objectives:

1. Identify the clinical justification for a ceiling track hoist system

2. Prescribe a ceiling track hoist system in a systematic manner

3. Recognise the management and rehabilitation options with ceiling track hoists

4. Prescribe and direct on the safe use of standing hoists

5. Demonstrate safe and efficient bed mobility procedures associated with hoists and client positioning.
