HISTORY RECORDER

TWO KINDS OF CONSERVATION

A look back from The Drift shows the oldest buildings in Coddenham; coming down to Lower Road the view is of more recent property. Both have contributed to village history and will, everyone hopes, continue to do so.

Modern buildings have one advantage over the old: it is not difficult to have them extended or otherwise altered if their owners wish to do so. Listed building consent or alteration in the conservation area is problematic.

Old or new, both are subject to weather conditions, however. At the end of December, after several inches of rainfall, the stream beside Lower Road overflowed.

A few years ago that might have caused subsidence from School Lane. These days the shuttering, while hardly attractive to see, has stabilised the banks. The floodwater was gone by early in January although somewhere, perhaps near the junction with Spring Lane, a car was reported to be stalled.

Curiously, although the stream was full running past Denny’s or Dennis Pond, water level in the pond itself remained low.

CODDENHAM TENNIS CLUB NEEDS YOU!

Coddenham Tennis Club is looking for a volunteer treasurer/membership secretary. This is not an onerous task and probably involves around ONLY 10 hours commitment each year. You don’t even have to play tennis, but if you do membership would freeto the post holder.

If you are interested in this ‘exciting’ opportunity please contact Debbie McDonnell - .

ST MARY'S CHURCH COFFEE MORNINGS

Just to let everyone know, we raised £1125.35 over the ten Coffee Mornings in 2017. A big thank you to all who helped in any way to raise this amount. This money has gone straight into the Fabric Fund to help fund re-decoration or similar maintenance, and is only used within our church.

We are back on Saturday 10 March with our FairTrade Coffee Morning as part of FairTrade fortnight. Sue Groom

BROOMHILL 2018

Your help with the Broomhill work day would be appreciated. This year’s date is Saturday February 24th from 10-30. We should attend to the usual tasks: removing brambles from the edge of the paths and cutting the hedge on the southern side of the hill. There are also some waste heaps left by the contractors that have to be removed. The fire will need to be tended. Bring gloves and secateurs and any other equipment that you think might be useful. There is an area to the far side of the hill that was overlooked by the contractors – it needs to be trimmed before it becomes a thicket. I look forward to seeing you.
