Final Examination Study Guide

The instructor will select 3 of the following questions for the final examination. Students will be responsible for answering two of the essays asked on the final exam. Each will be worth 40%. The Matching test will constitute the other 20% of the final examination.

1. The Tokugawa period in Japan history is sometimes described as a period of "centralized feudalism." Describe the nature of political rule under Tokugawa rulers. How were the Tokuwaga rulers able to maintain themselves in power so long? What were the objectives of the regime? What factors undermined the regime and led to its downfall?

2. Discuss the Western impact on Japan from the 17th C to the end of the 19th C. century. What were the objectives of the West in coming to Japan? What role did the US play in this process? How did the Japanese regime deal with this challenge during this period?

3. Describe the strategy of economic development and economic growth that was followed by the Japanese during the Meiji period. What were the objective of the regime in promoting growth and modernization? What impact did these policies have on Japanese relations with the West and the rest of Asia?

4.  Discuss the development of representative institutions during the Meiji period. How did these institutions develop? How did the Meiji regime function politically from the late 19th century through the early part of the 20th C. What structural problems prevented Japan from developing a fullblown democratic system during this period.

5.  Describe the political structure of Japan under the Meiji Constitution. What factors led to the demand for constitutional reform? What are the essential elements of the Meiji Constitution? What role did the bureaucracy play in this process? What were the outstanding political problems institutionalized by the Meiji Constitution.

6.  Describe the essential ingredients of the Japanese politics in the 20’s and 30’s. What was the relationship between the emperor, military and civilian political leaders during this period? How did the military come to dominate Japanese politics?

7.  Discuss the American occupation reforms in Japan. How did American reform Japanese political, economic and social institutions? To what extent did America transform Japan?

The instructor will pick 10 of these terms on the final exam. Students will be asked to match the term with its appropriate explanation. Worth 20%
