Product Design – Graphic Products Hemel Hempstead School AS level
Summer holiday task
Introduction
Throughout year 12 you will be completing a coursework project that is worth 60% of your AS grade. The coursework is split into three sections – Product Investigation, Product Design and Product Manufacture. This year the theme we will be working on is perfume/aftershave bottles and packaging.
During the first half term we will be working on the Product Investigation section – this will involve you selecting a perfume/aftershave to study in depth – you will compare it to another product, research the materials it is made out of and the processes used to manufacture it. You will also learn about how manufacturers maintain a high standard of quality in their products.
Summer Task
This task is worth 6 marks out of a total of 90 available in your coursework so it is important to follow these guidelines carefully!
1) / Select a perfume or aftershave to investigate. – Your task will be much easier if you have the actual product to handle but you will need the packaging that it came in as well.
2) / You will also need a comparison product of a perfumed body spray e.g. Lynx or Impulse – this must be made of a different material to your perfume/aftershave bottle therefore do not choose a ‘body shop style’ body spray that comes in a glass bottle – you need a metal aerosol spray.
3) / Complete an analysis of each product and a comparison of the two using the headings form, function, user requirements, performance requirements, materials and component requirements and scale of production and costs.
Guidance / There is an example of a completed analysis and comparison carried out on drinks containers attached along with a glossary explaining the different headings and details of the assessment criteria
Format / This work can be completed using Word, Publisher or PowerPoint but it must be formatted as landscape and A3. Your font size should not be any smaller than 12 and you should use a plain font.
Deadline and submission / Work must be submitted electronically during our first lesson in September so you should come prepared with it on a memory stick.
Guided hours / 8
Form / Why is the product shaped/styled as it is?
Function / What is the purpose of the product?
User requirements / What qualities make the product attractive to potential users?
Performance requirements / What are the technical considerations that must be achieved within the product?
Material and components requirements / How should materials and components perform within the product?
Scale of production and costs / How does the design allow for scale of production and what are the considerations in determining cost?

Assessment criteria

Level of response / Mark range
Fully justify key technical specification points (1 mark) that relate to form, function, user requirements, performance requirements, materials and/or component requirements, scale of production and costs. (1 mark) Compare and contrast one other existing similar product using the technical specification. (1 mark) / 4-6
Identify (1 mark) with some justification (1 mark) a range of realistic and relevant specification points that include reference to form, function and user requirements. (1 mark) / 1-3

Marks are awarded in the following order: you must achieve all the marks from the lower section first (1-3) before being awarded marks from the higher section (4-6). This applies to all the assessment criteria.
