SWANSON ACTIVITY CENTER

910 STATE STREET

LA PORTE, INDIANA 46350

On November 12, 1967, ten men interested in forming an antique automobile club met in the schoolhouse on the grounds of the La Porte County Steam Society in Hesston, Indiana. They were Tom Boothroyd, Jim Bolenson, John Edris, Jack Keane, Jack Martin, George Otterson, Chet Putzke, Dave Rice, Fred Slocum and John Torgenson. The club was named the “Michiana Model A Restorers Club.”

On June 22, 1970, the club name was changed to “MICHIANA ANTIQUE AUTO CLUB, INC.”

The Steam Society let the club use the schoolhouse for meetings for several years. Meetings were then held in members’ homes. In 1976 the Camp Fire Girls"Chalet" on First Street became our home, until the road was snowed shut, water turned off, and we forgot to bring wood for the fireplace. In 1983, for convenience and availability of parking, the monthly meeting was changed to our present meeting place, the Swanson Activity Center at 910 State Street, La Porte, Indiana.

A newsletter is sent to members each month reporting events of the past month, pertinent news and information of future events. Each member also receives a club roster, published once a year - usually in April.

Dues are $25.00 per year for both individual and family memberships, and members are not required to own an antique vehicle. Family membership permits both husband and wife to vote on issues.

The club exists for the enjoyment of its members as they join together and participate in their common interest. We are family oriented and encourage the participation of all family members in the club’s activities.

Our regular meetings are held at 7:00 p.m. on the second Wednesday of every month, on the second floor of the Swanson Activity Center located at 910 State Street, La Porte. There is an elevator to the second floor for those who wish to use it. At the close of each regular business meeting, refreshments are provided by a designated member, and another member presents a brief discussion of a subject they think will be of interest to the members present.

Throughout the year we conduct and participate in a variety of events. Our year usually begins in April with our “Spring Dust-Off” tour, usually about 60 miles duration. The Club conducts The La Porte Cruise Night, La Porte Sunflower Fair Car Show, and The Wanatah Scarecrow Festival Car Show. In addition to those events we support other regional groups by attending their shows, swap meets and cruise-ins as a Club. The season is topped off with the Fall Color Tour, usually in October, and finally ends with our annual Christmas Party.
