BOILER ANTIFREEZE

In this highly competitive market, I sometimes hear contractors say that their customers will not pay additional monies to have boiler antifreeze added to the system during equipment changeout or conversion. Please, try harder to try to convince your client that this is cheap insurance. Most people would not make a sizable investment in an automobile, a home or the like without coverage for a loss. Although, people who are not away often, can keep a closer watch on the system, remember that the boiler you are installing may have a limited lifetime warranty and individual’s habits tend to change over time.

While we are talking about boiler antifreeze, a disturbing rumor is heard too often, that some contractors are using automobile antifreeze in space heating applications. As a result of a recent discussion with Hercules Chemical Company, some concerns need to be repeated:

A.Is the antifreeze non toxic? Many systems have a domestic coil with the potential for leakage and are connected to a water supply. Without a backflow preventer, the potential for fresh water contamination becomes more acute. Don’t expose the occupants to unnecessary hazards.

B.Is the co-efficient of expansion close to water as Cryoteck’s is?

C.Will the inhibitors protect the heating system? The inhibitors in Cryoteck are specifically created to protect the heating system. Inhibitors in auto antifreeze may not be the same.

D.Are the heat transfer properties the same between auto and boiler antifreeze?

Most contractors take pride in their work and part of the “Job well done” should include the proper boiler antifreeze.

Axeman-Anderson Fills the Bill...

This past fall evolved into a very good heating season, and thank goodness the demand has held up reasonably strong. As heating system conversions continue, an increasing number of contractors have shown an interest in the “Centaurus” combination space and domestic hot water systems. These systems arfired by a reliable Beckett burner producing an efficiency rating of 83.9%. This space saving compact unit includes a 41 gallon stainless steel domestic water tank and as well as a heating circulator. An outside combustion air intake kit is available for oil units. A limited lifetime warranty on the domestic tank as well as the boiler makes this package hard to top. GRUNDFOS IMPROVED

Many of our customers have been loyal Grundfos Circulating pump users for many years and have come to depend on the reliability and ruggedness of the “Blue Brute”. For those customers who have had limited experience with this pump, here is some good news from the company. New design changes have been incorporated that increase the torque, create a watertight terminal box and provide forlonger bearing life. These changes have created such confidence in the company that they now are advertising that if the circulator fails within its three year warranty period, Grundfos will replace it with two “Brutes” and send along $50.00 for your trouble. Try the New “Brute” but don’t be surprised to see the “blue” is gone and the circulators are brick red in color.

Since I’m talking about circulators, there is some additional service info I’d like to pass along. Many wet rotor pumps that experience premature failure happen because the pump was not filled properly with water before startup. This condition usually results during the replacement of a failed pump. If the circulator is valved off, and following replacement, the new pump is immediately started, sometimes an air pocket can form that prevents water lubrication of the bearings. Any sort of squealing or whining sound is a sure sign. A suggestion is to open the inlet valve first and wait a short time before slowly opening the outlet valve. This should ensure that the bearing has time to become thoroughly lubricated before startup.

ONEIDA BTUtica MILES

We are pleased to announce an appreciation program for our New York State installer, exclusively from Utica Companies. BTUtica Miles is the way of thanking you for your business. Every time installers purchase qualifying Utica or Oneida products they will earn BTUtica Miles that can be redeemed for valuable travel or brand-name merchandise awards.

Here’s how it works:

This program starts January 1, 1997 and runs through December 31, 1997.

Once the installer purchases three (3) units of Utica gas or oil boiler and/or Oneida Royal oil or gas furnace, they will receive 2,500 BTUtica Miles for each unit. The more Utica products the installers buy, the more BTUtica Miles they will earn.

To report sales, the installers must complete and fax or mail a Claim form to Award Headquarters along with a sales receipt of the transaction.

Then, each month the installers will receive a BTUtica Miles Performance Statement showing miles earned for the previous period, program-to-date miles, miles redeemed and balance available.

Installers may redeem miles for travel and/or merchandise at any time during the program period .

ADP Gas Unit Heaters

Yaun Co. has increased its stock of gas unit heaters. We have previously stocked the CUH compact gas unit heater in two sizes, the CUH30 and CUH45. We are now stocking the SEP series in four sizes, 60, 90, 115, and 125 input natural gas with a conversion kit available for LP. The SEP is a very competitiveunit with many extra features. The competition charges extra for these features, eg., spark ignition, power venting, etc.

ADP makes the choice easy for the consumer with it’s unsurpassed technological breakthroughs. Every unit heater in the line features airfoil-shaped turning vanes. The airfoil design of the turning vanes curves the warm air downward and results in a stronger, longer throw than thought possible - up to 80 feet and right where needed.

Unique tubular heat exchangers are a dramatic improvement over standard “clamshell” heat exchangers found in competitive units. When heated, the tubes expand equally in all direction eliminating thermal stress. No “pops” or “bangs” on heat up and cool down.

ADP heaters include standard features that reduce installation costs and operating expenses. With other heaters, these are expensive options. In sizes through 175,000 BTUH the vent blower can be rotated in three different directions - vertical, horizontal left, or horizontal right. This eliminates the need for elbows in horizontal venting applications Most vent sizes are 50% smaller than the competitors, greatly reducing venting material costs.

With direct spark ignition there’s no pilot to blow out. A substantial saving is realized on gas consumption and increased seasonal efficiencies (AFUE). ADP’s heaters deliver up to 81% thermal efficiency and up to 80% seasonal efficiency.

These heaters are built to keep working and saving. They’re manufactured on computer controlled equipment in ADP’s state-of-the-art plant to meet ISO-9002 requirements. Inshot burners provide efficient trouble free operation and under most circumstances should never need replacing. No morecorrosion fallout to remove from the burners before every season. Stainless steel burners, an expensive option on competitors models, should never be needed, even in corrosive environments.

A self diagnostic control board assures dependable operation and trouble shooting ease. The low voltage terminal strip are well marked for quick installation. There’s even a “G” terminal for summer fan only operation with no relay. No competitor offers this as an option.

New Control Kits for Oil Applications

Three new Control Kits are now available for use with the Field Controls, SWG or PVE Sidewall Power Venter, or DI Draft Inducer. These kits provide operation of the oil burner motor and venter together and provide a pre-purge and post-purge for the venting system to reduce off-cycle oil after-burn odors. These items will not be stocked at Yaun Company, but we will special order them for you.

  • CK-65 is for the single or multiple oil fired appliances using a Honeywell R8184G Primary Control with one common power venter. Kit includes a draft proving safety switch, delay oil solenoid valve, preset pre-purge, and adjustable post purge to 1 to 10 minutes.
  • CK-66 is for a single oil fired appliance only using a Honeywell R8184P Primary Control. Kit includes a draft proving safety switch, preset pre-purge, and adjustable post purge of 2 to 6 minutes. A delay oil solenoid valve is provided with an appliance or installer supplied.
  • CK-67 is for multiple oil fired appliances using a Honeywell R8184P Primary Control with one common power venter, Kit includes a draft safety switch, preset pre-purge, and adjustable post purge of 2 to 6 minutes. A delay oil solenoid valve is provided with the appliance or installer supplied.

Why a Two Stage Pump?

Since any Suntec single stage pump can provide more than 20 inches of mercury vacuum, you might wonder why anyone would want to manufacture a two stage pump.

The answer is that a two stage pump satisfies the special need to pump fuel oil, which has certain characteristics that defy efficient pumping by single stage pumps.

Fuel oil starts to break up, or “boil” at vacuum levels as low as 10 inches of mercury. When that happens, foamy oil collects within the pump.

A single stage pump will send the foam directly to the nozzle, causing unstable atomization. The result will be for the burner to burn dirty and reduce the effectiveness of the furnace’s heat exchanger.

Also when the burner shuts down, the bubbles in the nozzle expand out of the nozzle, causing after burn, smoke and soot. Oil may even run down the nozzle line and drip on the pump shaft, making it look like the pump is leaking.

One way to correct this problem is to use a two stage pump incorporating two gearsets with carefully designed porting geometry.

The foam created by operating under high vacuum collects in the highest portion of the inside and around the internal perimeter of a pump. By design, the first stage gearset not only brings the oil into the pump, but also returns any foam back to the tank.

Also, the second stage gearset inlet ports are located so that this gearset is supplied clear oil at vacuum levels up to 17 inches of mercury.

However, good practice suggests that to accommodate all varieties of #1 and #2 fuel oils and to effectively compensate for the gradual reduction of line ID caused by build-up on the inner walls, vacuum should be limited to 17 inches of mercury on initial installations.

Ruud Factory Service Schools

The Ruud Service School is designed to provide access to new industry technology, a better understanding of how to install current products, as well as a working knowledge of servicing current heating and cooling products from Ruud’s residential line.

The Service School will include classroom and laboratory training. The Laboratory exercises give each student an opportunity to put the knowledge gained in the classroom to work in a hands-on atmosphere.

The three day sessions are held at The Richmond Technical Center, Richmond, VA.

CHECK VALVES & SUBMERSIBLE PUMPS

Check valves are important because they hold pressure in the system when the pump stops. They also prevent such conditions as back-spin, water hammer (hydraulic shock) and upthrust. Any of these or a combination of them can lead to immediate pump or motor failure, a shortened service life, or operating problems in the system.

BACK-SPIN: With no check valve in place or if the check valve fails, the water in the drop pipe and in the system can flow back down the discharge pipe when the motor stops. This can cause the pump to rotate in a reverse direction as the water flows back down the pipe and can cause excessive bearing wear because the motor is not turning fast enough to properly lubricate the thrust bearing. If the motor is started while back-spinning, this sudden reversal severely strains the pump and motor assembly.

UPTHRUST: With no check valve, or with a leaky check valve, the pump may start under zero or even negative head conditions. With most pumps, this causes an uplifting on upthrusting on the impeller/shaft assembly in the pump. This upward movement carries across the pump/motor coupling and creates an upthrust condition in the motor. While Franklin submersibles have upthrust bearings which allow limited upthrust without motor damage, it should be avoided to minimize wear in the pump and motor.

WATER HAMMER (HYDRAULIC SHOCK): If the lowest check valve is more than 30 feet above the standing water level or if the lower check valve leaks and an upper check valve holds, a partial vacuum is created in the discharge piping. On the next pump start, water moving at a very high velocity fills the vacuum, strikes the closed check valve and the stationary water in the pipe above it, causing hydraulic shock. This shock can split pipes, break joints and damage the pump and/or motor. Water hammer is easily detected by a banging noise.

When discovered, the system should be shut down and the problem corrected. Using a “soft start” to eliminate water hammer rather than replacing a check valve may be an option. This could also be a bandage rather than a cure. If a “soft start” is used, the ramp time must be 3 seconds maximum.

Check valves are designed to permit water flow in one direction only. It is recommended that one or more check valves always be used in submersible pump installations. If the pump does not have a built-in check valve, a line check valve should be installed in the discharge line within 25 feet of the pump. The lowest check valve must be below the drawdown level of the water supply. For deeper settings, it is recommended that a line check be installed every 200 feet.
