YUVAL AVITAL

Born in Jerusalem in 1977 and living in Milan, composer, artist and guitar player Yuval Avital developshisworks in a variety of spaces, including public venues, industrial archaeologicalsites, theatres and museums, challenging the traditionalcrystallizedcategoriesthat separate the arts.

His wide-ranging career includes the realization of sound and video installationsalso of vastdimensions, collective performances involving sound masses in the creation of contemporaryrituals, icon-sonicoperas and artworks, complex multimedia frameworks, technologicalprojects with the participation of scientists and usage of artificial intelligence, and compositions for soloists, choirs, orchestras and ensemblesinvolving, sometimes, traditionalmasters of ancientcultures, dancers, performers and non-musicians.

Significantartworks include: ALMA MATER - a 1200 mq icon-sonicinstallation for 140 loudspeakers, legendary stars of La Scala, visuals and lacemakers (La Fabbrica del Vapore, Milan 2015); THREE GRADES OF FOREIGNNESS - a large scale monographicexhibitioncomposed of threeinstallations and variousartworks (Fabbrica del Cioccolato Art Foundation, Switzerland 2017); a large-scale multimedia transformation of an entiretrain station (Ostiense) during the Notte Bianca di Roma (2007); SPACES UNFOLDED - a sound installationrecomposingitself with Artificial Intelligence system created with NASA scientists (Bergamo 2012); RIVERS - performance of a crowd of refugees and loudspeakers (Cittadellarte-Fondazione Pistoletto 2015); Packman vs. Escher - a sonic and movement score for 16 dancers (Biella 2007); Fields - an invasion of nature’ssoundsinto a city’scentralsquare (Bergamo 2015); Izaac & Deborah - a video/sound installationatMilan’s Triennale (2016); CORPO - an interactive dance-video-sound installation for twodancers (Fondazione Pomodoro, Milan, 2010).

His major performances include: REQUIEM MONUMENTALE Part 1 - concert with twoparallelcompositions, the first for an itinerantbrass band of 100 elements and the second for a soloists’ choir of 14 voices, commissioned to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the MonumentalCemetery of Milan (MonumentalCemetery of Milan, 2017); Fuga Perpetua - an icon-sonic opera created in collaboration and sponsored by UNHCR (Pavarotti Opera House, Brighton Festival, NEAT Festival 2016); REKA - for 6 traditionalsingers, 2 percussionists and a ‘vocalcrowd’ of hundreds (WarsawAutumn 2014); KARAGATAN - for 100 traditional gong & bamboomusicians and 2 conductors (Philippines 2013); OTOT - icon-sonicsymphony (opening of the symphonic season of Theatre of Como, Italy); GARON - for 45 tubas, 6 percussionists, 3 conductors, choir & live electronics (closingevent of Dirty Corner by Anish Kapoor, Milan, Italy 2012); 4 icon-sonicoperascommissioned by leadingItalianfestivals (KOLOT 2008, SAMARITANI 2010, LEILIT 2011, NOISE FOR SYD 2013).

Avital’schamber and multimedia workshavebeenperformed by leadingconductors, ensembles and soloistssuchas Sandro Gorli, José Luis Gomez–Rios, Tempo Reale Ensemble, Meitar Ensemble, Quartetto Lyskamm, Paolo De Gaspari, Francesco Grigolo, Maria Grazia Bellocchio, Maurizio Ben Omar, Gianmario Bonnino, DirkHirthe, Eros Sabbatani, Seiko Tanaka, Sergio Scappini and Giovanni Cospito.

Avital isalso a highlyacclaimedguitar player, performingbothclassic and electricguitars. He graduated in the Jerusalem Music Academy and laterstudied with Angelo Gilardino, formerpresident of the Andreas Segovia foundation. He hasperformedworldwide in venuessuchas the National Conservatory of China (Beijing), Centre Pompidou (Paris), Palazzo Reale and Teatro Nuovo (Milan), and Quinta da Regaleira Palace (Portugal). He hasperformednumerous world premieres for solo guitar, many of themwritten and dedicated to him. Since 2007 he hasfocused on hisown music and selectedcollaborations.

His works and concertshavebeen broadcast on SKY CLASSICA TV (whichincluded a documentary on his work), Radio France Musique, RSI (Switzerland), CCTV China, Radio 3 suite (Italy), Kol Ha Musica (Israel), WQXR and ClassicalGuitar live (USA) amongothers.
