The post is for 31 hours per week 39 weeks per annum (term time plus 5 staff training days)

Brook Green Centre for Learning is a school for students of both genders aged 11-16 with moderate learning difficulties and/or behavioural, emotional and social difficulties. The new school is a state of the art educational facility in Plymouth.

Primarily the post is to cover for the short-term absence of teachers by supervising small groups of students to enable their learning to continue with little interruption. This will involve reading, explaining and clarifying the work and encouraging students to achieve in a safe environment where good behaviour is maintained. Students are entered for a range of examination subjects at key stage 4 and follow the national curriculum in key stage 3.

We are looking for someone who is friendly, outgoing and confident who has experience of working with Special Needs students and genuinely desires to help young people to achieve.

Training will be provided. We are a SEAL school

JOB DESCRIPTION

The following outlines the duties required for this post. It is not a comprehensive or exclusive list and duties may be varied from time to time, which do not change the general character of the job or the level of responsibility required.

  • To supervise students in the short-term absence of teachers. To ensure that students’ learning is maintained by overseeing the work set by the teacher or another member of the teaching team.
  • To undertake some marking of student work and accurately record progress.
  • To report back to the Teacher on progress made in delivering the lesson set.
  • Under the direction of the Examinations Officer to invigilate examinations observing examination board regulations.
  • To proactively support the learning of students in class by explaining, reading, clarifying work including I.C.T. programs and encouraging successful completion of tasks.
  • To proactively support the learning of students in our external learning environment.
  • To manage the behaviour of students whilst covering to ensure a constructive and safe environment. This will involve utilising the school’s behaviour management and learning rewards systems.
  • To develop an expertise in a small number of curriculum areas through supporting the teacher in the production of work plans/worksheets and through the exploration of I.C.T. resources.
  • To register tutor groups in a teacher’s absence and to attend assembly if required.
  • To supervise the daily reading programme of a tutor group in the teacher’s absence and our phonics and numeracy programmes.
  • To support individual students through precision instruction.
  • To participate in the school’s performance management.
  • To ensure safe practice within laboratories, workshops and practical lessons.
  • To contribute to the SEAL work within the school and our healthy school’s agenda.
  • To ensure the security of classroom equipment and resources including ICT.
  • To participate and supervise students whilst on school trips.
  • To participate in a programme of staff development.
  • To keep up to date with Curriculum developments.
  • To collect and return work to the teacher.
  • To undertake break and lunchtime supervision.
  • To report back to teachers on issues arising during the cover.
  • To liaise sensitively with parents/carers as agreed with the teacher.
  • To have the opportunity to assist voluntarily with extra-curricular activities.
  • To attend after school meetings as required.
  • To uphold the ethos of the school at all times.

When not required for cover the cover supervisor will be required to support a classroom teacher or supervise students in our Inclusion Centre.

ESSENTIAL / DESIRABLE
EXPERIENCE AND
