Rules

Acts must not have been performing comedy regularly for more than two years before the start of the registration period (ie since before January 2014), and must not have previously performed in the competition in two or more years.
Acts must perform their own, original, material.
Acts must stick to the allotted time for each round.

• For the Heats the acts can perform a maximum 7 minute set.

• In the Final, the acts can perform a maximum 10 minute set.

Please note that Failure to adhere to competition rule 2 or 3 will result in either points being deducted from voting or elimination from the competition. Hilarity Bites Comedy Club will decide what action to take in each separate case, and will take any action that they see fit, either at the heat or afterwards.

Acts must be available to perform in one of the heats in Darlington, which will take place on Monday 6th June, Monday 13th June, Monday 20th June, and Monday 27th June, and the final on Monday 25th July (as part of the Darlington Comedy Festival).

The winner of each heat will be decided by an audience vote & a panel of independent judges. Second and third placed acts may be called upon should the heat winner be unable to honour their position in the final.
The top act in each heat (as decided by audience vote & said panel of judges) will go through to the final of the competition. In addition, the judges’ two favourite placed acts will also qualify for the final. The judges’ decision is final.
A similar voting system will occur for the final as for the heats.
In all cases Hilarity Bites Comedy Club reserve the right to make any decision they deem necessary, and each case will be judged on its own merits. Any decision Hilarity Bites Comedy Club and their representative’s make is final.
Entrants consent to being filmed, photographed and/or recorded by Hilarity Bites Comedy Club where required for the campaign and for films or recordings made pursuant to this rule being used for any media established now or in the future.
Entrants, by entering waive in favour of Hilarity Bites Comedy Club and those authorised by it any so-called “moral rights” they may have in relation to the recording of their performance and any interviews carried out.
Entry to the Competition by Entrants is done at their own risk. Attendance by Entrants at any Event staged by Hilarity Bites Comedy Club and travel to and from any such Event is also at the Entrant's own risk and Hilarity Bites Comedy Club accepts no responsibility or liability in this regard.
Whilst every attempt will be made to fit you into a heat that is easiest for you to travel to, this may not always be possible. Where possible Hilarity Bites Comedy Club will try and arrange the heats to accommodate acts travelling from similar locations. Early entry is advisable if you need to get to a specific heat.

These rules are by no way exhaustive and Hilarity Bites Comedy Club reserves the right to amend as and when necessary. These will be made public on and all registered contestants will be contacted by email.
