Study guidance: Beginning of March (with course commencement), just after July school holiday and just after October school holiday (with Practical assessment) in the north (Pretoria) or south (Cape Town)

Receipt of course books: Learners receive the first book with the first Study Guidance Visit (March).

Assignments: There are 2 to 4 very short assignments per Unit Standard. No exams!

Practical assessment: This is a highlight and stretches from Friday 13:00 to Saturday 14:00 with the third Study Guidance Visit in Pretoria or Cape Town (October).

Certificate: Successful learners currently obtain a Paidion Children’s Ministry Certificate. This competency certificate has no academic accreditation, but does not lack any academic quality or credibility whatsoever.

Course content

Unit Standard 1: The church (The subject)

·  What is the church’s reason for existence?

·  How does one become part of the church?

·  Can children already become part of the church?

Unit Standard 2: The child (The object)

·  What are the uniquenesses of the child?

Unit Standard 3: Children’s ministry (The task)

·  What is a definition and are the core values of children’s ministry?

·  In what practical ways can the church minister to the child regarding: Grace (Salvation), God’s Word (Bible), God-directed talk (Prayer), Groups (Community of believers), Gifts and Going (Witnessing)?

·  Which are some guidelines for making and using some visual aids?

Unit Standard 4: Children’s ethics & pastoral care (The task continued)

·  How can I guide a child in his choices?

·  How can I guide a child from his crises?

Outcomes

To provide learners with:

·  a paradigm from which to think of children’s ministry,

·  the best possible knowledge for children’s ministry,

·  the necessary skills for children’s ministry,

·  the necessary enthusiasm and confidence for children’s ministry and

·  a Paidion Children’s Ministry Certificate.

Course details

Time: 1 Year correspondence course

Language: Afrikaans and English (since 2011)

Qualifications: People from all denominations with at least grade 12 or an equivalent certificate. People without last mentioned can follow the same course, but receive a slightly different certificate.

Assessment: No exams. Only assignments. Cf. Entry form regarding Practical assessment.

Dr Leon van Zyl:

·  was in full time congregational ministry for 20 years,

·  received child evangelism training in the USA,

·  attended several children’s ministry conferences in the USA,

·  has 15 years experience of children’s ministry,

·  was assistant-National Director of CEFSA,

·  was Head: Children’s Ministry at the Huguenot College in 1996-1997,

·  was quest lecturer in Children’s Ministry at the Theological Faculties of the Universities of Stellenbosch, Pretoria and Vista,

·  in 1999 received the CBSA-award for the best children’s book in the RSA: Jy mag maar vra ... oor God en Jesus and

·  is co-author of the Jy mag maar vra-omnibus (2005) en author of Die ontwikkelingsfases van jou kind (2007).
