Hereford - Education Fellow (in medicine)

JOB DESCRIPTION

Objectives

This is a one year post aimed at junior or middle grade doctors with some clinical experience and an interest in Medical Education. Two Education Fellows will be appointed, one (this post) to provide undergraduate teaching in general medicine and a second post will provide teaching in surgical specialities. It will provide a positive step towards a career/special interest in Medical Education and enable the postholder to develop skills to supplement their specialty training application.

The primary objectives are:

  • Delivery of undergraduate medical student teaching
  • Development of teaching skills and completion of Certificate in Medical Education
  • Clinical work to maintain and develop skills to be competitive at selection for specialty training

The Hospital

HerefordCountyHospital is an associated teaching hospital of the University of Birmingham Medical School. It is a DistrictGeneralHospital set in the countryside with a large catchment area including many patients from the Welsh Marches. It has been highly praised for it’s friendly atmosphere and has lowest student:patient ratios in the West Midlands ensuring good access to clinical teaching. Medical students from years 3, 4, and 5 are attached to the Trust for the following modules:

3rd year Integrated Medicine and Surgery

4th year EDE (Elderly Medicine, Diabetes and Eyes)

ARI (Anaesthetics, Respiratory Medicine and Intensive Care Medicine)

5th yearObstetrics & Gynaecology

Paediatrics

Senior Medicine

Senior Surgery

Emergency Medicine

Student numbers vary during the academic year to a maximum of 32 students on site. There is a rapid turnover of students with 4th and 5th year modules lasting 5 and 6 weeks. The Education Fellow posts are established to assist with the delivery of Undergraduate teaching within this setting and also to look at ways of improving and developing teaching and learning in the Trust. The Education Fellow posts are part of a teaching academy which includes senior clinical tutors, senior clinical teachers and clinical teachers.

Personal Development

The postholders will be supported in their personal development in education, and will be able to maintain clinical skills through attachment to appropriate departments. Links have been established with the Medical Education Unit at the MedicalSchool, and for educational research with the Postgraduate Deanery.

The postholder will be supported to complete a Certificate in Medical Education, supervision for this will be provided by the Head of Academy. In addition there are regular regional meetings for all Education fellows for training, sharing good practice and developing the roles

General Provision

Location

The postholder will be required to work at HerefordCountyHospital.

Job Plan

Upon appointment the postholder will agree a job plan with Head of Academy. The professional development needs of the postholder will be tailored to the job plan and the varying numbers of students, but will be roughly:

1/2 time clinical teaching (mainly in general medical specialties)

1/4 time working on Certificate in Medical Education

1/4 time clinical work to support professional development (i.e. theatres, ward rounds, clinics, exam study)

The postholder will be responsible to the Head of Academy. They will work closely with the undergraduate team within the Trust. In addition they will be accountable to consultants to whom they are attached for clinical work.

Responsibilities

Clinical

To provide service within a specialty(ies) appropriate to the postholder’s prior experience and future plans, to which undergraduate students are attached.

Teaching

To deliver and develop clinical undergraduate medical student teaching according to requirements of University of Birmingham Medical School. This may include teaching in modules from years 3, 4 and 5 of the curriculum.

Administration/Audit/Managerial

To liaise with the undergraduate administrative staff at the Trust and MedicalSchool personnel as appropriate. Contribute to the development of audit of teaching and learning at the Trust.
