JUST FOR FUN

Puzzled

A little silver-haired lady calls her neighbor and says, “Please come over here and help me. I have a killer jigsaw puzzle, and I can’t figure out how to get started.”

Her neighbor asks, “What is it supposed to be when it's finished?"

The little silver haired lady says, “According to the picture on the box, it's a rooster.”

Her neighbor decides to go over and help with the puzzle. She lets him in and shows him where she has the puzzle spread all over the table.

He studies the pieces for a moment, then looks at the box, then turns to her and says,

“First of all, no matter what we do, we're not going to be able to assemble these pieces into anything resembling a rooster.”

He takes her hand and says, “Secondly, I want you to relax. Let’s have a nice cup of tea, and then,” he said with a deep sigh . . .

“Let’s put all the corn flakes back in the box.”

LAST WEEK’S PROGRAM

Len performed the induction ceremony for the club’s newest Rotarian, Steve Edmondson, owner of KRYN 101.2 FM in Socorro (right). Lynn is his sponsor.

Meet Steve Edmondson

Nashville native Steve Edmondson, who had never lived more than 90 miles from his hometown, moved to Socorro with his wife and four of their six children last May. Steve is the youngest of three brothers, all teachers and coaches, and all graduates of Belmont University in Nashville. Two older daughters remained in Tennessee.

So how did Steve get here from there?

His wife, a physical therapist, just happened to apply for an open position in Socorro. After an interview last March with Beth Beers and Sharon Long, she was offered the job even before leaving town. She accepted it, and the family headed cross-country. “This is quite a bit different than Nashville,”said Steve, adding that he really liked it here.

Steve is the owner of KRYN Mine Country 101.2 FM, something he never thought he’d be doing. Through his wife, he met George Funkhouser, half of the “Manny and George” Warrior play-by-play team. In time, he was asked by station owner Tamara Pace to make some commercials and the like; his official first day on the job was Oct. 1, 2013. Bill Pace, Tamara’s husband, had died in January 2013, leaving the station in turmoil. It was scheduled to go off the air on Dec. 31, 2013 without help, so Steve agreed to stay on, and eventually purchased the station outright.

Steve outlined prices for radio spots, and invited Cynthia to be a guest on “Keeping You Informed.” Steve would like to start a “Swap and Shop” service, and invited Rotarians to fill out an online questionnaire.

LAST WEEK’S PROGRAM

Meet Cynthia Connolly

Cynthia is the owner of Mountain Spring Education, a small business; and contracts with Health Kids Socorro County to provide services for children. She earned her teaching credentials through New Mexico Tech and the University of New Mexico, and taught for several years before moving to Ireland for a year, and her presentation included photos of castles and rolling grass hills, all sites she visited with her husband and two adopted nieces. Cynthia said the conflict between Protestants and Catholics was very much in evidence.

She lived in Magdalena and taught at Alamo for two years; and later worked at Cottonwood Valley Charter School until funding cuts ended the after-school program there. For the past two and a half years she has contracted with SGH’s Nadine Ulibarri-Keller to provide healthy programs and activities for elementary-age children, including The Bike to School program and planting school gardens at Parkview and Zimmerly. A program for third-graders encourages them to eat more fruits and vegetables, limit their television-watching to one hour of less per day, and to drink zero-calorie water.

“We’re also looking for funding to create a bike path around Sedillo Park,” she said, and to carve a trail from the new rodeo grounds to SHS. “I wrote a grant for this, but haven’t heard back.” Other activities include the Pet Parade during SocorroFest, Free State of Socorro, Community Arts Party and Save Our Bosque Task Force. “We can always use volunteers,” Cynthia said.
