The following are a list of coaches’ responsibilities; however they are not the rules in full. All coaches must read through the entire rules. Coaches must agree to the following before the applications will be reviewed.
Coach Selection and certifications
1.01 The Civitan Club and its CBC shall approve all Head coaches and Assistant Coaches on a yearly basis. Interested parties must
complete an application and submit it to a CBC member in order to be considered for a coaching position. All coaching
positions are subject to background checks.
1.02 The age division commissioners will notify selected applicants for Head Coaching positions after the background checks have
been completed.
1.03 Every Head Coach and a minimum of two (2) Assistants Coaches per team must be certified in NYSCA The head coach and at least one assistant coach will need to attend a coach’s clinic offered through the CBC. This must be completed by the first day of practice. NYSCA is available online. Failure to comply with this rule will result in loss of coaching eligibility.
1.04 Head Coaches may utilize non-certified parents as temporary coaches for games when the Assistant Coaches are absent (or ejected).
1.05 Every Coach and one assist coach per team MUST be certified in CPR with AED training. The CBC will offer 4 trainings.
Coaching Responsibilities
2.01 The Head Coach shall obtain a sponsor for the team (minimum of $350). This must be completed with money submitted by draft
day. The CBC must grant any exceptions.
2.02 No team practices of any kind at any location may be held after January 1st and before February 19. A team practice is defined
as three or more players from the same team getting together to practice or play baseball. Each team may have one indoor organizational meeting (with no players’ equipment present) prior to February 19th. There are no exceptions unless approved ahead of time by the baseball committee.
2.03 Only the Head Coach may approach umpires during a game about a call or a decision.
2.04 The Head Coach shall see that the dugout is cleaned of all trash and equipment after each game.
2.05 The Head Coach shall see that the concession stand is properly staffed by a minimum of five adults at his team’s work time(s) The Head Coach may have his team buy this assignment for $240. This must be paid to Civitan one week before the season begins. A Head Coach who later decides to have his team buyout the assignment may do so with 2 weeks notice and $300. (This is subject to change without notice)
2.06 The Head Coach is responsible for the safety of the players during practices and games.
2.07 The Head Coach shall encourage and enforce good attendance at practices and games by all players. If a player misses two practices without proper notification, the Head Coach shall meet with the player’s parent(s) to discuss the reason(s) for such absenses. The reasons for any recurring absences of any players should be discussed with the commissioner. Any player missing practices could be subject to limited play or suspension pending the Commissioner’s decision.
2.08 The Head Coach shall immediately notify his commissioner of a player withdrawing from a team.
2.09 Keeping the Official scorebook is the responsibility of the home team. If the designated home team cannot keep the official scorebook for any reason, the visiting team shall be ask to do so, and may then opt to become the home team. The visiting team is responsible for the operation of the scoreboard.
2.10 The head coach will be responsible for turning in / updating his score/pitching records at the end of the game within 24 hours via the web site. Failure to do so may result in a Civitan suspension of the head coach for the next game.
General Conduct
The Head Coach is expected to be a positive role model for the Assistant Coach and young players by teaching and displaying good sportsmanship and ethical behavior both on and off the field. Anyone watching or participating in a game is to conduct himself/herself in a respectable and sportsmanlike manner. The Head Coach is ultimately responsible for the conduct of anyone related to his team. If a problem arises during a practice or game he feels he cannot control, he shall seek help from an umpire or CBC member. An unruly spectator, for example, will be asked to leave the field or ejected from the park if necessary. This could result in further civil penalties.
