Helping Your Child at Home
Here are suggestions for helping your child with math at home…
- Ask your child to show you the answers to today’s assignment in his/her math binder. Have your child explain his/her thinking for some of the solutions and see if your child seems to “get” it. Make sure your child is organized with the use of the binder.
- If you need help understanding the math for a lesson, consider visiting the following website:
- Keep track of how your child does on his/her basic skill quizzes. These basic skills include: fractions, fraction operations, integer operations, ratios, percents, order of operations and solving equations. Your child will have practice handouts in the binder to review and study.
- In addition, the SCASD has established an IXL account for your child. This is an online resource where your child can practice their math skills. Practice on the IXL account will be assigned throughout the year.

Student Expectations
Students need to give their best effort, come to class prepared, show respect and be kind.
Student Materials
Students need a pencil and/or pen, a colored pen and a 1.5 or 2 inch binder separated into 3 sections. The labels for each section of the binder are the following: Notebook, Graded Assessments, and Basic Skills.
Each student will be given a graphing calculator (TI-83 plus) to use in class. If you want to buy a calculator you may, however, it is not required. If you buy one, I recommend the TI-84 Plus. This model can be used throughout high school.
A” Typical Day”
Students will spend the majority of each class period completing questions in cooperative learning groups. At the conclusion of each class we will discuss the main ideas from the day’s lesson, clarify work that needs to be completed at home and write this info in the assignment book.
Homework
Students will be assigned homework every day they have class. Due to the block schedule your child will have math every other day. The homework should take anywhere between 10 to 20 minutes. One point will be awarded for each homework assignment. Homework assignments are posted on the course SCOODLE page, in Google Classroom and also linked to the Purple Team homework page.
Tutoring
Extra help is available for all students. I am available during area for math help as needed.
Group of The Unit
Students work in cooperative learning groups. The seating is changed for each unit. Groups who complete assignments on time, attend class regularly, cooperate, and behave in a respectful manner are eligible for winning “Group of the Unit.” They win a small prize (pencil, sticker, candy, etc.) and have their picture taken for the hallway bulletin board.
Grading
Students will be graded on quizzes, unit tests, partner problems and reflections. Grades are posted regularly. They can be accessed through the parent portal.
Parents are welcome to visit class at any time. You do not need to give me advance notice. However, you must sign in as a visitor at the main office before coming to class
