Helpful Hints for Resident Director (RD) Applicants

How does the placement process work for RD applicants?

Applications are accepted through April 30, 2017. Dependant on the number of positions available, and location of available spots (i.e., all female hall), the RD Recruitment & Selection Committee will review application materials and offer interviews to qualified candidates. After interviews, the RD Recruitment & Selection Committee will offer positions in June. Please note for the 2017-2018 academic year, thereare extremely limited openings available.

When do new RDs move into their apartments?

New RDs move into their apartment August 4, 2017. (Resident Advisors move in andbegin training on August 13, 2017.)

May a RD keep another residence?

The Saint Mary’s residence hall should be the primary residence and home for the RD. Critically, RDs should be present at nights, weekends, and major campus events. The Director of Residential Experience should be notified if you are away from campus for more than two consecutive nights.

How are new RDs supported during their first year?

New RD training, in early August, is required. Also, a RD manual is provided for new RDs. Finally, new RDs participate in a cohort throughout their first year, sharing experiences and supported by current RDs.

May I live with a spouse and/or children in the RD apartment?

Though a spouse is permitted, RD apartments are only one bedroom. Space within the apartment is extremely limited. Saint Mary’s residence halls house over 1600 students mostly between the ages of 18-22. Spouses and/or children should clearly understand the unique environment this presents.

What comes in a RD apartment?

New RDs may request a furnished apartment, or may bring all of their own furniture. Furnished furniture includes: one bed, one dresser, one desk and desk chair, one kitchen table with chairs, and one sofa.

How do I do laundry?

Laundry facilities are typically in each residence hall with no fees. SMC ID is required.

What happens in the summer when students are gone?

RDs are permitted to live year round in their apartment. (During the summer, residence halls are used for summer school residents, campus student workers, and conference services.)

Are graduate students able to apply?

Graduate students are eligible to apply for a RD position; however, full time Saint Mary’s faculty, staff and Christian Brothers are given priority.

Are pets allowed?

RDs are currently not allowed to have pets in the residence hall, per Human Resources policy.

What is the time commitment for the position?

RDs are expected to spend roughly 20 hours per week involved in their residence hall. This time could be spent with residents, supporting programmatic efforts, working with fellow RDs and mentoring the resident advisor.

What else should I know?

RDs are expected to follow the same campus policies as students. In addition, applicants who are offered positions will undergo a background check conducted by the Saint Mary’s Human Resources department.
