13 Colonies
HELP WANTED!!! HISTORIAN NEEDED!!!
Your expertise is needed now!
Before the states were joined together to form the United States, they were known as the 13 Colonies.
You will research one of the 13 Colonies and present your findings to the class. We will then discuss as a class the similarities and difference that existed among the colonies in the different regions.
Objective:
You will be defining key colonial vocabulary terms, naming the 13 colonies, identifying the founders of the colony you are researching, and use maps and the internet to locate your colony. While completing research on your colony you will be able to tell the class how your colony got its name, how it was founded and find many more interesting facts.
You will be turning in a Poster Board and a Research Report!
Instructions:
Follow the steps listed below to complete your quest.
You will be graded based on your research, poster, and oral presentation.
Step 1: Vocabulary
Having knowledge of key vocabulary is very important. You must find 10 words that you think are EXTREMELY important to know about colonial times.
Use the Internet to find interesting words!! Use the websites in the "Research" section to help you with your vocabulary search.
Look for vocabulary related to: -key people -geography -religion -historical terms
Keep track of your 10 vocabulary words on a separate sheet of lined paper. Make sure you write down the word and the meaning of the word.
Step 2: Map
Knowing the location of each of the Original 13 Colonies is very important. Identify the 13 colonies. Label each colony. Color all New England Colonies red, all Middle Colonies blue, and all Southern Colonies green.
Use a map found on the internet or your social studies textbook to help you color in the colonies based on what region they are in.
Step 3: Research
Now this is the part where you become an expert on your colony by looking at the sites below to answer questions on the worksheet. After you find the information for the worksheet, you will need to write the information in essay form. You will have time in class to do this but you must work on this at home as well. This portion of the project is due on Wednesday February 6th.
Here is a list of websites in which you may use to help you with your research.

Step 4: Poster
Now that your research is complete you need to work on how you will teach the class about your colony.
You will use poster board to create a visual presentation of your colony. Trace the outline of your colony on the poster board using crayons, markers, colored pencils, etc.
Next add all the information about your colony to your poster board that you think we should know. Add color and pictures to cover up all blank spaces.
You must teach the class about all of the information on your research information sheet.
**YOU ARE THE TEACHER!! YOU MUST TEACH THE CLASS ABOUT YOUR COLONY!**
You will now decide how to present this information to the class visually. You MUST include an outline of your colony (the shape). Poster paper, markers, crayons, and colored pens are available in your classroom. You may decide to draw pictures, use words, print pictures at home, etc. All information from your research must be covered in your presentation! This portion of the project is due on Wednesday January 30th.
Class Discussion
Once each colony has been presented we will discuss a number of questions as a whole class. Be prepared to answer the following questions:
*What would your life be like if you were living during colonial times?
