Hello, I am Debbi Burdick, the very proud superintendent of the Cave Creek Unified School District.

Thank you to ALL in our school community, from our CCUSD families, staff, community partners and of course, our students. Collectively, you have all contributed to making it another exciting and productive learning year in Cave Creek Unified. It takes a team to give our students the best education possible and we know our CCUSD collective team is A+, just like our schools.

Before you know it, it will be August 10th and the 2017-2018 school year will be off and running. Our schools and District Office will be open Monday through Thursday during the summer. However, our elementary schools and middle school will be closed from June 16th to July 17th. During that month, the District Office can answer questions and provide enrollment information.

Summer vacation is a great time to expand learning in new and innovative ways. Just as school field trips are learning experiences, so are trips in AZ and out of state. Before embarking on a family day trip or vacation, research all the interesting places to visit and have your child(ren) choose some that they have an interest in. We are fortunate to live in a state where there is history, experiences, and geography galore. The Phoenix metropolitan area alone has the Children’s Science Center, Create, Children’s Museum of Phoenix, Phoenix Art Museum, the Phoenix Zoo, Butterfly Museum or Dolphinaris Arizona. And then, of course, our entire state has historic towns, exhibits and cultural events throughout the year—the summer is a great time to take day trips or weekend trips throughout our great state.

Have children document their trips and experiences on their phones, saving pictures to put together in short memory presentations for later. Phone apps and tools allow them to keep their memories in one place as well as stored for sharing once they get back to school or for further research about places they have been.

Very importantly, encourage your children of any age to read. They should read what they are interested in; and materials at their reading level. Reading is a skill that can be honed and reading for enjoyment is the best practice to sharpen reading levels and increase vocabulary, as well as gain new knowledge in most cases.

Have a safe, fun summer and I look forward to seeing you back in our schools this August.
