Course Description:
Included within this course are relations and functions, graphing using transformations, algebra of functions, conic sections, polynomial and rational functions, systems of equations, matrices, exponential and logarithmic functions, binomial theorem, sequences and series, and applications.

Textbooks, supplies, & Other Resources:

College Algebra a concise approach by Paul Sisson. Your textbook and the Hawkes online software will be free for you. You DO NOT need to purchase a textbook or online code for this class. You will want to purchase a calculator for this course. I would highly recommend a graphing calculator, TI-83, TI-84 or TI-84+, but at the very least a scientific calculator. I would also recommend a 1 inch 3 ring binder.

Attention: You do not need to purchase a textbook for thisclass.

This course is part of our new Inclusive Access program designed to reduce the cost of course materials for students.The e-textbook, plus online study materials and assignments your instructor may use in your course, will cost around $80 and will be automatically billed to your bursar account when you register.

Your instructor will give you instructions which will allow you to access the digital content for this course through Blackboardautomatically. There will be an optional loose leaf print book available for sale at the bookstore. Your instructor will let you know when those books are available on the shelf.

Student learning outcomes:

Students who successfully complete this course should be able to understand and apply the following concepts: analytical reasoning and problem-solving techniques; graphs, functions and models; polynomial and rational functions; exponential and logarithmic functions; systems and matrices; conic sections; sequences, and series.

NEXT COURSE IN SEQUENCE:

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be prepared for MTH 1613, Plane Trigonometry, or MTH 2193, Elementary Statistics, or MTH 2513, Finite Mathematics, or MTH 2523 Calculus for Business, Life, and Social Sciences.

COURSE WITHDRAW: The deadline to withdraw from a course shall not exceed 3/4 the duration of any class. Contact the Counseling Office at any TCC campus to initiate withdrawal from a course ('W' grade) or to change from Credit to Audit. Check the TCC Academic Calendar for deadlines. Students who stop participating in the course and fail to withdraw may receive a course grade of “F,” which may have financial aid consequences for the student. There may be financial aid consequences to withdrawing from a course as well so begin the process with a discussion with the faculty member assigned to the course. Then contact the Advisement Office at any TCC campus to initiate withdrawal from a course ('W' grade).

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY: Academic dishonesty (cheating) is defined as the deception of others about one’s own work or about the work of another. Academic dishonesty or misconduct is not condoned or tolerated at campuses within the Tulsa Community College system. Tulsa Community College adopts a policy delegating certain forms of authority for disciplinary action to the faculty. Such disciplinary actions delegated to the faculty include, but are not limited to, the dismissal of disrespectful or disorderly students from classes. In the case of academic dishonesty a faculty member may:

  • require the student to redo an assignment or test, or require the student to complete a substitute assignment or test;
  • Record a "zero" for the assignment or test in question;
  • Recommend to the student that the student withdraw from the class, or administratively withdraw the student from the class;
  • Record a grade of "F" for the student at the end of the semester.

Faculty may request that disciplinary action be taken against a student at the administrative level by submitting such request to the Dean of Student Services. Course Drop or Withdrawal:A student who has been found responsible for academic dishonesty in a course may not drop or withdraw from the course without faculty approval. If the student processes a drop or withdrawal from the course, the action will be reversed and the appropriate grade will be recorded on the student's transcript.

MATH LAB:

The Math Lab in room SE 8150 is a great place to study alone or with others. It has various study aids specific to this course. There are solution manuals and self-paced tutorial computer programs. There are also friendly tutors who can answer some questions for you. Students are encouraged to take advantage of this FREE facility. No appointments are needed. Please be sure to sign in and out and follow lab rules concerning food/drinks in the computer areas.

Teaching Methods:

Class time will consist of demonstration & lecture, individual & group work, and question & answer time. I will make every effort to answer all student questions. No question should go unasked or unanswered.

Attendance:

Your attendance in all class sessions is mandatory for your success in this course. If you must be absent, it is your responsibility to read the text, get the notes from a classmate and complete the assignment for the class you missed. You are responsible for the material covered as well as all announcements or changes in the schedule made in your absence. Inclement Weather: TCC rarely closes. HOMEWORK:

All homeworkwill be completed onlearn.hawkeslearning.com.There are 3 phases to completing your homework - Learn, Practice and Certify.You will receive the exact same question types in Practice as you will see in Certify, but Practice will help you prepare for Certify by providing you with help through the ‘Tutor’ button and ‘Explain Error’ option. You must earn at least an 80% in Certify in order to receive credit for the assignment. If you attempt certify and do not earn an 80% you will be provided with a customized set of practice questions to work on in order to help prepare you before your next attempt to Certify. You have unlimited attempts to earn an 80% in certify. Once you earn an 80% in certify you have earned a 100% for that assignment.

late assignments AND MAKE-up work:

A grade of “0” is assigned for incomplete homework assignments. However, you can work on passed due homework assignments for 50% credit. Always make sure that you are caught up with current homework before working on passed due homework. The due dates for all work is posted on the calendar at the end of this syllabus as well as next to each assignment on learn.hawkeslearning.com. To make up a test you must contact me before the test to explain your situation and why you should be allowed to make up the test.

FINAL EXAM:

This exam will be comprehensive. Students may not use their own books, notes, or scratch paper during this exam. To assist students in preparing for this exam, the following policies have been established.

1. The common final will be the only exam for this class given during finals week.
2. Each student should receive instructions for accessing a sample final.
3. Students may use a calculator. Calculators may not be shared and no other devices may be used.
4. Scratch paper and a list of standard formulas will be supplied with the College Algebra Exam.
*Your lowest test will be replaced with your final exam score if it is higher. In the event that your final exam score is your lowest test score then no unit test will be replaced.

SYLLABUS CHANGES: Occasionally, changes to the syllabus may be necessary. Students will be notified of any changes to the syllabus in writing.
