Heller Center for Arts & Humanities

Guest House Visitor Info

Property Description

Tucked into the quiet hills of westcampus, the Heller Center is a renovated adobe compound that includes the Main House,Studio, Guest House, Garden and three outdoor event spaces. The Heller property was the home of Larry and Dorothy Heller from 1933 through 1999. The couple was well known in Colorado Springs. Larry Heller was a celebrated artist, especially for his painting, pottery, sculpture, and metal-work. He was also a set designer and character actor, working with the Alexander Film Company in the 1950s. In addition, Larry was an avid music aficionado, raced sports cars, and competed in equestrian events and golf tournaments. He relished his reputation as a bon vivant, calling his home the “Yawn ValleyDry-Land Yacht Club”. The requirement for membership was an “allergy to regular work.” Dorothy Heller was the first female member of the Colorado Springs Police Department. She worked with “troubled-youth” and organized efforts to combat domestic violence. She was a life-long gardener and loved the tranquility of the valley. She donated the property to UCCS to preserve her husband’s memory and to give new generations’ creative opportunities.
