Minutes for Saturday, October 01, 2005

Present: Emmy Fearn, John George, Kay George, Virginia Lagiss, George Mattis, Marina Papanikolaou, Loys Rodatos, Jim Vorrises

Absent: John Cambus, Anna Konstantopoulos, Demetra Panomitros, Helen Tombropoulos

Call to order and Minutes of Last Meetings: President George Mattis opened the meeting at 9:30 PM.

The minutes were approved with additions.

Treasurer’s Report: John George reported that two deposits have been made since the last meeting, and the balance in our account is now $7,373.93. George noted that the $100 check to UHAS (for the reception for the Greek sailors) has not yet cleared.

Membership Update:

•Membership Mailing, September Letter: George prepared and sent out the informative letter laying out our upcoming activities and activities of the past year.

•Membership Directory: George stated that the directory is ready to be printed, and he will send it out when the flyer for our November 20 event is completed. We have 105 paid members, with a total of 140 members, including honorary members.

Future Events:

Axion Nominations:They are due end of September. Virginia contacted some people who identified worthy nominees, but several preferred not to be nominated this year. Steve Cardiasmenos has been nominated. John Cladis was contacted and asked to submit a letter of support. Virginia will be out of town, and so she asked George to chair the Nomination Committee.

October 15th Scholarship Applications:applications stillopen.

November 20th Annual Meeting:It will cost $400 for use of hall and kitchen at Holy Trinity. Eugenia Berdali will be speaker. Board members will organize bring trays of sandwiches, etc., cheeses, from Costco (Emmy will pick up). Loys will check to see if they have a projector and screen at the church, perhaps at the school. George will bring table cloths, plastic utensils, small plates, napkins, etc. Refreshments will include trays of sandwiches, cheese in bulk and cut it up, crackers, grapes, cookies, and halvah. All Board of Directors are asked to be at the church by 2:00 PM to help set up.

Christmas Youth Party:We want to encourage younger people to get involved with HAPS and discussed trying to get other organizations—such as HLS—to participate in a Christmas event for the younger crowd. Marina will talk to Aspasia Papavassiliou (president of HLS) and Mia Mattis (secretary) about having an after-work event for 21-30 year olds at Harry’s Bar on Fillmore and Sacramento.

Greek Letters Day: tentatively scheduled forFebruary 12th or 19th, 2006. During Greek Letters Day, when we honor the Axion recipient and scholarship winners, we could have the new Counsel General Xenia Stefanidou and Bishop/Metropolitan or the new priest deliver short greetings in English.

•Plaque Re-Dedication: tentatively planned forApril 30, 2006. We will start planning for this event in January, and willplan to put Greek and American flags in ground to highlight the event.

Open Forum:

•UHAS:Ted Laliotis, UHAS President,was sick for awhile. Their next event was tentatively scheduled for October 28, but in the meantime invitationswere received for a reception at the Ritz-Carlton for the dedication ofa $2 million Chair in Hellenic Studies at Stanford.

Hellenic Journal: The article on Greek Letters day must go in by October 9. Emmy will prepare and send in an article.

Officers/Executive Board needs:We need more people on the Executive Board, and will need new president by November 2006.

Next Board Meeting:The next meeting will be on Saturday, Dec 10, 9:30 AM.(was later postponed to 1/7/06).

Adjournment: Next meeting we will talk about Greek Letters Day. The meeting was adjourned at 11:45 AM.
