  • We will go over the paragraph as a class and discuss the grammatical conventions applied.

Lesson Presentation:

  • Students will take a quiz on Parallel Structure
  • After students have taken the quiz, we will finish the Romeo and Juliet film.
  • Students are to take note of the similarities and differences of the film and play.
  • Discussion: Which is the most powerful adaptation: Shakespeare’s text or the 60’s film? Perhaps both powerful as different art forms?

Tuesday, March 14, 2017:

Opener:

  • Students will copy and revise the paragraph projected onto the Smart Board.
  • We will go over the paragraph as a class and discuss the grammatical conventions applied.

Lesson Presentation:

  • Grammar Notes: What is a phrase? Prepositional Phrases, Adjective Phrases, pg. 467-468
  • Exercise 1 Identifying Adjective Phrases, pg. 468-469
  • Students will brainstorm and compose a thesis statement for the following persuasive prompt: Should elderly drivers give up their license after reaching a certain age?
  • Students will work independently to compose an introduction and a body paragraph for the topic.
  • We will continue watching Romeo and Juliet.

Closure:

  • What is a prepositional phrase? What is an adjective phrase?

  • Students will, then, be responsible for independently composing an introduction and body paragraph for the topic.

Friday, March 17, 2017:

Opener:

  • Students will copy and revise the paragraph projected onto the Smart Board.
  • We will go over the paragraph as a class and discuss the grammatical conventions applied.

Lesson Presentation:

  • We will review participles, then students will take grammar notes on participle phrases.
  • They will, then, complete exercise 5 on identifying participle phrases, pg. 474.
  • Students will, then, pick a persuasive prompt we have discussed in class. They will write a complete, thesis-driven essay on one of the persuasive topics over the weekend, the rough draft of which will be due Monday.
  • Creative Writing: As a class, we will look at multiple six word stories.
  • We will discuss the meaning and power of each story.
  • Students will, then, come up with their own six word stories.
  • If time permits, they will pick one of the six word stories to compose a larger story with that will be turned in at the end of class.
  • Students will identify the participles they notice in their writing.

Closure:

  • Reminder: Rough Drafts will be due Monday, March 20th.

  • We will edit the paragraph as a class and discuss the grammatical conventions applied.

Lesson Presentation:

  • Discussion: How is the final project coming along? What difficulties have you encountered? I will check for rough drafts.
  • We will take notes on pronouns and rules to distinguish pronouns from nouns and adjectives.
  • Students will complete a worksheet in which they identify the italicized words as nouns, pronouns, or adjectives depending upon their use in the sentence.
  • We will go over the worksheet as a class to assess understanding.
  • In the time remaining, students will work on their rough drafts if they did not have them today, or they will edit their rough drafts.

  • What are the three rules for pronouns?

  • Review the three rules concerning pronouns
  • Grammar Notes: Personal Pronouns; focus: personal, interrogative, indefinite, and demonstrative pronouns
  • Students will complete a worksheet which we will go over practicing this skill.
  • Discuss: How to format a paper in accordance to MLA Format (Heading, Spacing, Page number)
  • Students will begin typing their final copies on the laptops.
  • Points to consider: Is my language creative? Do I show instead of tell? Do I use Dialogue the correct way?

Closure:

  • Exit Slip: What are the different types of personal pronouns we went over today and what are their functions?

  • Students will complete a worksheet practicing this skill.
  • Students will be given time to finish their final copies.
  • Students will complete a KWL Chart about Shakespeare. They are only to complete the K and the W portion of the chart.
  • If there is any time remaining, students will finish typing their final copies if needed.

Closure:

  • What is the difference between a reflexive and intensive pronoun?

  • Students will complete a worksheet in which they practice this skill which we will go over together.
  • Literature Notes: Students will take notes as we view a brief film about Shakespeare.
  • Students will complete the L portion of the chart with the most important things they have learned about Shakespeare. They will turn the chart in for a grade.
  • If there is any time remaining, students may finish and print their final copies.

Closure:

  • What are relative pronouns? What did you learn about Shakespeare?

  • Students will hand in this week’s bell ringers for a grade.
  • Students will finish their final copies. These must be turned in today.
