Exam III Review and Study Guide

Exam III will be held during the regularly scheduled final examination period on Wednesday, December 15, from 12:45 - 2:45 PM in Room 300 HE. SIRS forms will also be filled out at that time, unless time permits during lecture on Wed. Dec. 8. The exam will consist of 55 multiple choice, matching and true-false questions and 2 short answer essay questions related to the evaluation of interior space. Please bring a No.2 pencil . The exam should take a maximum of 50 minutes.

Terminology is extremely important. Make sure that you know the definition of all terms that are in italics or bold type in your course packet and in the Pile text book. Pay particular attention to the following:

1. Catch-up material after last exam: There will be no questions on bathrooms. Review your notes (only; not text) on historic preservation terminology and the concept of designing emotionally supportive residential environments as discussed under the title of “Grace and Measure.”

2. Interior Materials: Review criteria for selection of materials(class) (Also review specific materials in Pile)

a. Wood and Organic Materials

1.Wood: Know characteristics of and difference between hardwood and softwood, lumber and plywood; veneer; outstanding characteristics of cherry, maple, oak, mahogany, teak, walnut; know definitions of parquetry and marquetry

2.Organic materials: Characteristics; Know definitions ofwicker, cane, bamboo, rattan. What are rice straw, sisal and coir used for?

b. Masonry: Definitions of igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic rock (and outstanding examples of each); rubble, random ashlar, ashlar; definition and characteristics of concrete; terminology related to bricks; gypsum and stucco

c. Metals: Know color, outstanding characteristics and uses of iron, steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper, brass, bronze, chromium, tin, pewter, silver, gold

d. Ceramics: Know definitions of earthenware, stoneware, china, porcelain; vitrified; What are the differences between quarry tile, ceramic tile and ceramic mosaic tile?

e. Glass: Difference between plate glass and float glass; difference between thermal glass and laminated glass; fiberglass; Difference betweenhand-blown and molded glass; beveled , leaded, and stained glass

f. Plastics: General definition; general characteristics; Difference between thermoplastics and thermset plastic; lamination; Outstanding characteristics and uses of Acrylics, FRP, Melamines, Polyurethane, Vinyls

3. Walls and Wall Finishes

a. Design considerations. Terminology:Base, Dado, Cornice, Frieze, Moldings, Plaster, Gypsum, lath, drywall (etc.). Know characteristics and advantages of different types of paint, definitions of special paint finishes and effects.

b. Wallcovering: Know types and appropriate uses, based on outstanding characteristics. How can fabric be applied to a wall? What other materials are available with paper backing?

c. Paneling: Know characteristics of solid wood and plywood paneling. Why does board paneling have different “textures?” How are moldings used?

4. Doors and Windows/Window treatment

a. Doors: Know definitions of all terms listed in course lecture outline and/or Pile text

b. Windows and Window Treatment: Same as above. You are responsible for all terms listed in the outline. Know types of windows (especially fixed glass, double-hung, casement, clerestory, Palladian and French windows); types of draped window treatments, headings (such as Cornice, valance, swags, jabots, cascade, lambrequin), blinds and shades(roller, Roman, Austrian, Venetian, vertical).

5. Hard Surface Flooring

a. What are the major advantages and disadvantages of hard surface flooring (as opposed to soft surface floor covering)? What is the difference between the natural, or architectural, materials and resilient flooring? What types of stone finishes provide the most friction?

b. Know the types of stone, masonry and ceramic products which are used for flooring and the outstanding characteristics of those discussed in class. What are the differences between the various types of wood flooring products?

c. Know the outstanding characteristics of all resilient flooring materials discussed in class. (NOTE: Pile text will clarify, add to your understanding of all materials and terminology we have discussed.)

5. Soft Surface Floor Covering

a. Advantages and disadvantages. Terminology: Carpet, Broadloom, Rug.

b. Outstanding characteristics of carpet fibers. Definitions, characteristics of different face textures, Definitions of gauge and stitch rate. Know the definitions and outstanding characteristics of types of construction--tufted, woven (especially Axminster and Wilton), needle punching and fusion bonded.

c. Know the definitions of all types of rugs discussed in class.

6. Stairs: Know the definitions of all terms discussed in class (see lecture outline), as well as the major design considerations.

7. Ceilings and Fireplaces

a. Ceilings: Design considerations. Know definitions of all ceiling types discussed in class (see lecture outline).

b. Fireplaces: Know definitions of all terms (see lecture outline).

8. Lighting

Know the definitions of the following terms, which are discussed in the textbook, if we don’t get to all of them in class: light, illumination, lumen, footcandle, lamp, luminaire; incandescent, fluorescent; ambient, task and accent lighting; direct, indirect and diffuse distribution. Pendant fixture, torchère.
