WHY DID PEOPLE OF THE DIASPORA CREATE HEC?
HEC was created in 1995 by Diaspora Greeks of the Internet. Most founders
came from the Hellas Discussion List, an organization of more than 800
members. The founders saw the need to unify the Hellenic Internet services
and information scattered around the world in one single location which
Greeks and others could find easily.
The new organization was envisioned as a safe place for keeping information
about the Hellenic civilization, allowing every Greek worldwide to access
such information, communicate with others, and promote the Hellenic ideas.
With the help of sponsors such as Hellas on Line, an Internet provider in
Greece, HEC managed to set up the Poseidon project about the maritime
history of Greece.
HEC numbers about twenty volunteer members. HEC is subscribing new members and seeking external funding. The accumulated experience of our volunteers on the Internet can bring only success to this noble cause. The Hellenic spirit is alive and HEC intends to distribute it around the world via the Internet.
