Pisco Sin Fronteras
Pisco Sin Fronteras is a new, non-profit organization which started in August 2008 on the first year anniversary of the massive earthquake which devastated the city, destroying 80% of homes and killing around 600 people. We are giving assistance to the people who most need it by helping to build houses, schools, sanitation units and helping with other community-based projects. It’s been over two years since the disaster and there are still a huge amount of people without housing and adequate sanitation.
Notes on the trip to NU Rotaractors from Amanda Dixon:
Let me start by saying that this trip is truly going to be fabulous. In every way, shape and form. I met with Pisco Sin Fronteras and I think you all are really going to love working with this organization. They actually have about 9-10 different projects going on at once. The way it works is that every morning at 8 am there is a meeting with ALL of the volunteers. They go over the projects and then they have people sign up for what they want to do. So maybe 4-6 people are working on a project, which means that we will be split up but people can work on the projects that interest them the most. Also, you don't have to work on the same project every day. If you work on a project and really really like it, you get the opportunity to stay working on that project, or you can switch and try out another one. It is really neat. I went and visited 2 of their projects, which included an ecological house they have built on the beach, which is going to be basically an ecological learning center for the community- they also just finished building a bird watching tower. I also visited a community where they are building community compost toilets. Right now that specific community has no toilets or any form of bathroom. The people go to the bathroom in a nearby field. So they are working WITH community members to build these community compost bathrooms. Super interesting.
Other projects they are working on this week (I went to their meeting yesterday morning so I got to hear everything and it got me super excited) included rebuilding a community member's home... redoing a roof for another family, working to paint murals at a local school, working on a biofuel project, cleaning up a beach area to start more projects, removing rubble and construction leftovers from a home so they can start building more, helping out at a local day care, etc... so as you can see, there is a wide range of projects, something for everyone.
Pisco Sin Fronteras is one of the most interesting projects that I have ever seen. I am excited for you all to see how it is run and to see their organization.
The Rotaract Club in Pisco is going to do stuff with us every day of the week. Some days there will be some of their members who will come work on the projects with us (when they get done with school/work) and they are going to put together a list of "after dinner activities" to do with us, which will include a city tour of Pisco, going to see some neighborhoods around pisco, etc... They are meeting this Friday and then will send me a list of tentative plans for us to do.
Peru Water Filters Project, Lurigancho-Chosica District, Lima, Peru
A Project Link Matching Grant Project (W05622) of the RC La Molina Vieja, Peru and Holmen Area Rotary, Holmen, WI
Nearly one-half of Lurigancho, Peru's million residents live near the banks of the Rimac River in extreme poverty without access to clean water. The lack of clean water is the source of numerous health problems within the community. The Rotary Club of La Molina Vieja wants to supply and install biosand filters for home use in certain areas of Lurigancho and train communities in proper use and care of the filters. Each filter can provide 15 people daily with clean water, 100 filters will benefit 1,500 people.

Interview subjects:
Chris Kjnooas
Jacob Johnson
Chris and Jacob are both currently on campus finishing up their last trimester at USAL. They will be starting their Applied Field Experience in June.
Laura Graham
Jane Kellum
Mary Bean
Laura, Jane and Mary are fellows that graduated in last 2009 but are still in Buenos Aires. They would havea good perspective on the program since they have been through it all.
From Mirta: The best day to be on campus would be Thursday 25 March. There is no class in Friday (but Friday might be a good day to conduct the individual interviews). One way to get the whole group together, since not all of them have classes together, would be to bring them all, with a professor, to the library and you could film them there. In addition, the fellows take classes at USAL downtown. Mirta suggested that you could film there but if you were interested, you could also go to their suburban campus in Pilar for more footage.
