Biography

A seasoned executive, Steve Lieber has led the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) since 2000 and brings to HIMSS nearly 25 years of healthcare experience, over 20 of them in healthcare-related association management.

Steve served as CEO of the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) for nearly nine years before accepting a position with the American Hospital Association in 1998 as Vice President, Division of Personal Membership Groups. Prior positions include Vice President of Operations and Director of Hospital Information Services for the Illinois Hospital Association; Senior Budget Analyst for the Illinois Bureau of the Budget; and Assistant Administrator, Research and Statistics for Arkansas Social Services.

Steve's primary functions at HIMSS are twofold. In his organizational leadership role, he is responsible for setting the society's strategic direction in cooperation with governing board and staff, in his organizational management and program development role, he has emphasized enhancement of HIMSS's educational and publishing programs, development of advocacy and professional affairs programs, and expansion of the Society's information

and market intelligence services.

Steve is passionate when discussing the future of technology and healthcare, citing, for example, such issues as utilizing data for clinical decisions, systems integration and confidentiality. He believes that HIMSS is positioned to become an even stronger player in the healthcare arena through utilization of tools such as the Internet. He sees the Internet as a major focus for future educational programming and emerging technologies as providing the greatest opportunities for the society's growth.

Steve has been a Certified Association Executive (CAE) since 1994, and is a member of the American Society of Association Executives and the Association Forum of Chicago land. Steve received an MA in Health Policy and Administration from the University of Chicago, a BA in Psychology from the University of Arkansas, and has completed additional course work at the graduate schools of business at both universities and at the Keller Graduate School of Management.
