Health Safety Advisor

Our Calgary office seeks a Health Safety Advisor who is experienced with health and safety management system development, analytics and maintenance. The successful candidate’s position will be dedicated to corporate health and safety program improvement including ongoing support to our growing company and team.

This position has safety leadership responsibility reporting to the Health Safety Development and Analytics Coordinator and is locatedin the Calgary, Alberta head office. The individual will support Matrix business activities to meet and/or exceed all occupational health and safety requirements including internal, client, legislation, and industry standards. Matrix is looking to grow its current Health Safety team with qualified and experienced professionals who will continue to provide its employees and clients, across all business teams, with exceptional health and safety support.

Responsibilities:

  • Support and improve Matrix’s health and safety management system by providing effective program and system development, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Provide strong health and safety mentoring, coaching and support to internal and external clients, as necessary.
  • Duties can be expected to include activities such as:
  • Providing expertise in occupational health and safety legislative compliance (e.g., AB, BC, SK, MB, ON, OSHA) and industry best practice (e.g., Enform, CSA)
  • Researching, assessing options and building business cases
  • Writing and reviewing policies, procedures and other reference material for employees
  • Participating in health and safety management system audits – with potential to lead internal audit
  • Assisting in the development, evaluation and delivery of health and safety courses
  • Analysis of trends and appropriate response plans
  • Overseeing action plans and programs to ensure companywide consistency and achievement of health and safety goals and objectives
  • Working in close partnership with teams and committees to promote health and safety practices in the workplace
  • Ongoing communications and active participation in meetings

Specific duties will be assigned based on the individual’s experience, skills and qualifications. The position will be mainly office-based and is expected to have no more than a 5% travel commitment during the first 12 months.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5+ years’experience with health and safety management system development and support
  • 5+ years’ experience preferred with management and auditing experience (e.g. comprehensive internal audits, ISO 18001, Enform COR, Partnerships)
  • Occupational Health Safety designation and education (preference OH&S Certificate or degree with CRSP/CSP designation)
  • Solid understanding of Occupational Health Safety (e.g. legislation, industry best practice) and its application to work activities and business requirements
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite of software
  • Strong service mentality supporting internal and external clients; ability to build and maintain effective relationships across a diverse set of key stakeholders
  • Solid analytical skills, effective writing abilities, and strong communication skills
  • Ability to work well within a dynamic, challenging and rewarding work environment
  • Willingness to travel to satellite offices and field locations when required (10% or less)
