Physical Fitness is made up of both health-related and skill-related fitness:

A. Health-related fitness items relate to how well the systems of your body operate

- For Example: Is your heart an efficient pump? Are your muscles in good

shape?

  • There are 5 health-related components of fitness
  1. Muscular Endurance: ability to use muscles for long periods of time
  2. Muscular Strength: ability of the muscles to exert a force one time
  3. Body Composition: ratio of fat to muscle, bone and other body tissues that compose your body
  4. Cardiovascular Endurance: ability of the heart, blood, and respiratory system to supply necessary fuel and oxygen to muscles during exercise
  5. Flexibility: the range of movement possible at various joints

B. Skill-related fitness items are factors which relate to you becoming an athlete

- For example: Are you fast? Do you have good eye-hand coordination?

  • There are 6 skill-related components of fitness
  1. Agility: ability to change the position and to control the movements of your whole body
  2. Balance: ability to keep an upright posture while either standing still or moving
  3. Coordination: integration of eye, hand, and foot movements
  4. Power: ability to do strength performances at a rapid pace. Strength and speed are both involved in power
  5. Reaction Time: amount of time it takes to get moving once your senses signal the need to move
  6. Speed: ability to cover a distance in a short time period. 7/8 - 0
