BOTTLED WATER IS SAFE FOR ALL CONSUMERS
New Bisphenol A report shows bottled water products do not present any health risks
July 9, 2009 (Toronto, ON) –Health Canada has released the results of their latest study on Bisphenol A (BPA), which reaffirms bottled water products are safe for infants, seniors and all other consumers.
The purpose of Health Canada’s study was to gather information regarding the levels of BPA in bottled water products, in order to update exposure estimates for Canadians. Samples of 54 different bottled water products, marketed under 21 brands by 16 companies, were tested.
“For our members, this Health Canada report brings both validation and vindication! It clearly demonstrates that bottled water is a safe, healthy and portable alternative to other beverages,”said Elizabeth Griswold, Executive Director of the Canadian Bottled Water Association.
“Scientific evidence is critical to ensuring consumer safety and the CBWA applauds Health Canada’s research that clearly shows our bottled water is safe for everyone to use,” said Griswold.
According to Health Canada’s report, an adult (weighing 60 kg) would have to drink approximately 1,000 litres of bottled water every day to approach the science-based safe intake limit for BPA recently established in Canada.
In addition to Health Canada, other international food regulatory agencies, including those in the United States, Europe, the United Kingdom and Australia-New Zealand, have validated these results based on current scientific evidence.
This study confirms previous conclusions by Health Canada that demonstrates exposure to BPA through food packaging – including bottled water – doesnot pose any health risks to the general population,including infants and seniors.
In order to maintain high-quality safety standards, all CBWA members are subject to annual, unannounced third party inspections to ensure compliance with the association’s stringent Model Code Standards of practice. In addition, federal government inspectors of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) regularly audits the operations of all bottled water companies to ensure the quality of their products.
