Half term 1 /
  • Write press releases for key stages 4 and 5 results.
  • Ensure data is carefully analysed and priorities for the future are considered.
  • Write and deliver address to staff on the first Inset days; remember to praise high performing staff/curriculum areas.
  • Ensure staff are briefed on changes to Ofsted guidance.
  • Ensure staff properly understand changes to accountability measures/curriculum changes.
  • Ensure all staff have received safeguarding updates and signed to say they have read the updated KCSIE.
  • Code of Conduct read and signed by all staff.
  • Write and deliver assemblies to all pupils on the first days of the academic year.
  • Consider results of low performing staff and measures to deal with such situations.
  • Meet all new staff and conduct a learning walk that takes in these colleagues’ lessons.
  • Review the beginning of term with SLT: have inductions, timetable arrangements, baseline assessments etc. run smoothly?
  • Conduct review meetings of GCSE & A-level data with subject leaders.
  • Sign off appraisal documents, set new objectives and consider pay recommendations before communicating with governors.
  • Delegate elements of the SEF to senior leaders to be rewritten in light of results and pull together the completed document.
  • Clarify which senior leaders attend which governor sub-committees.
  • Fix governors agenda, write report and deliver it.
  • Write and deliver presentation at speech day/celebration event.
  • Write and deliver presentations for Year 7 and Sixth Form open evenings.
  • Monitor the systems for quality assuring teaching and learning.
  • Ensure teachers’ pay and appraisal polices are updated. In maintained schools ensure they comply with the latest School Teachers' Pay and Conditions Document (STPCD).
  • Ensure October census data is submitted.

Half term 2 /
  • Begin annual curriculum review in the light of budget projections for the future academic year and begin conversations with those middle leaders likely to be affected.
  • Ensure mock examinations have been organised and that reporting to parents is taking place.
  • Monitor capability processes.
  • Check pupils at risk of underperforming have been identified and appropriate interventions are being planned.
  • Ensure appraisal and QA processes are occurring to schedule.
  • Review results analysis in the light of ASP (Raise Online replacement) and/or KS5 equivalent.
  • Prepare and give presentation at KS4 information evening.
  • Review staffing structure for next year.
  • Begin budget planning with an evaluation of the current budget. Consider the impact of pupil numbers and curriculum planning on this.
  • Ensure curriculum plan has been completed and present to relevant governors’ committee.
  • Review longer term strategic planning.
  • Ensure the headteacher review is completed by 31st December or in line with your school’s policy.
  • Update the SEF in light ofASP.
  • Ensure mock examination results are analysed and feed into intervention strategies.
  • Report to governors.
  • Ensure seasonal arrangements are organised for the end of term.

Half term 3 /
  • Submit January census data.
  • Cost thecurriculum and new school improvement plan.
  • Review statutory policies with the clerk to governors so there is a cycle in place for updating.
  • Monitor intervention strategies and ensure key pupils are raised with staff.
  • Attend RAP (raising attainment and progress) meetings.
  • Ensure mid-year appraisal reviews with staff are completed.
  • Oversee continuing options process and translate into staffing and timetabling planning.

Half term 4 /
  • Ensure the school website contains up-to-date versions of the required information and meets statutory guidelines.
  • Constantly review staffing requirements during the interview season.
  • Continue to report progress and budget implications to the whole governing body with a focus on future planning.
  • Continue to monitor QA and pupil progress systems.
  • School improvement plan mid-year review.
  • Check any revisions to the school prospectus.
  • Work with governors to set the budget.

Half term 5 /
  • Oversee final arrangements for exam season.
  • Implement final/revised intervention strategies.
  • Continue with scheduled QA and monitoring of pupil progress systems.
  • Plan for leavers’ days.
  • Plan year 6/7 and 11/12 transition days.

Half term 6 /
  • Write, consult on and communicate school development priorities for next academic year.
  • Review SEN funding and hours with SENCO.
  • Check that transition days occur to a high standard.
  • Plan the annual reporting, recording and assessment schedules for next academic year.
  • Ensure the QA process is updated and in line with Ofsted grade descriptors.
  • Check the school calendar, including residential trips for year ahead, is published for parents and staff.
  • Ensure the staffing structure is in place for the new school year (including contracts and any revisions to job descriptions).
  • Final timetable troubleshooting.
  • Report on progress and final staffing to governors.
  • Prepare for next appraisal target setting and review cycle in September.
  • Lay out expectations for middle leaders for exams analysis, department SEF/improvement plan writing and set deadlines for completion.
  • Plan and deliver assemblies for the last day of term.
  • Check that a training plan has been written.
  • Agree line link arrangements.
  • Ensure the inset day arrangements are published.
  • Plan results day arrangements for August (including pupil collection and press/data releases).
  • Sign off final NQT reports.
