HEADTEACHER’S NEWSLETTER

Thursday 12th May 2016

Dear Parent/Carer

Thank you once again for your continued support this year helping
maintain our high standards and expectations of students with regard
to uniform, readiness to learn, behaviour and homework. The last half term has seen the final preparations for GCSE exams with Year 11 students starting some practical subjects and all are due to sit the RE exam on Monday. A full timetable is available on the school website and school twitter account.

I’m very proud of the KS3 students and their triumphs in Town Sports and the fantastic learning that has been taking place throughout the school. Look out for more details of a big event in school on June 30th.

Town Sports

Congratulations to Ebor Academy Filey for their performance at Town Sports on Monday. Students from Years 7, 8 & 9 competed in both track and field athletics events throughout the day and demonstrated some outstanding performances against Scalby, Graham, Pindar and St Augustines. Filey were victorious in the end and brought the Town Sports Trophy home. Thank you to all schools who took part and to the staff and students who helped to run each of the events. It was a brilliant day, the weather couldn’t have been better and the win was the icing on the cake. The top 3 competitors from each event will now go through to the Town v Country athletics meet on Wednesday 25th May.

Year 11 Prom

It may seem hard to believe that our Year 11 students are so near to the end of their time here at Ebor Academy Filey, and whilst they are working hard towards their final exams great excitement is mounting for the Prom. As you know students are required to have attended a minimum of 30 revision sessions to gain their passport to the Prom and it is very pleasing to see that most are on track to achieve this. I am sure that if you are a Year 11 parent there is great anticipation building in your home as final arrangements are being made for transport, ball gowns, suits, hairstyles etc. The evening is also a wonderful opportunity for staff to say goodbye to students as many have seen your son/daughter ‘blossom’ throughout their time at the school. Please may we remind you that final payment for the Prom is due by Friday 20th May.

Order forms and payments for the leavers hoodies and the Yearbook are required by Friday 13th May.

Students in the Spotlight

Tabitha Smart (Y9), Lucy Brown & Holly Parker (Y10) are pictured here with former Filey School student Rebecca Holmes. The girls are dancers with the Garage Dance Studio in Filey and recently took part in the UK DC European Championships in Blackpool where the quad team became European champions. Congratulations girls!

News from the Science Department

There have been some exciting lessons this term in Key Stage 3 Science! Mrs Wade’s

bubble experiments; what helps make the biggest bubble? The results were quite fabulous. Mr Hawley’s

Year 8’s have been making miniature ‘Egg racer cars’ as part of their study on circuits. The great

race off winner will be announced later this month. Dr Gammons’ classes have been researching
electricity and famous scientists who have been involved in the progression of electricity and
electrical engineering. Mrs Craggs’ and Miss Francis’ class made chocolate rocks and their own
‘fossils’ as part of their studies on the rock cycle. Other classes have taken advantage of the nice
weather, learning outside and conducting ecological surveys of the plant and animal life around
the school. Science Club are making solar boats in May. They will compete against other schools in North

Yorkshire, representing Ebor Academy at the STEM Gifted and Talented day at the end of June. All in all it is a very creative and exciting time in the Science Department.

Bistro Update

The Year 11 Bistro has now been refurbished and is complete with a table tennis table in place. A huge thank you goes to the former Filey School PTFA for the generous donation from their fundraising to support this. Additional thanks goes to the ladies of the Parent Focus Group who have worked hard in the community to encourage donations including paint from Dixons, £80 from Filey Bay Today and also the donation and delivery of 2 sofas. A special mention from all the Year 11 students to Mrs Ingham for all her efforts.

‘An Inspector Calls’ Theatre Trip

On 4th May, 136 Ebor Academy Filey, Key Stage 4 students went to Bradford to see the acclaimed West End version of “An Inspector Calls” – a GCSE set text for English Literature. The whole day ran extremely well. This was due entirely to the superb behaviour and attitude of all the students who attended. They felt justifiably proud of themselves, with theatre goers commenting on how smart they looked in Ebor Academy uniform and how their behaviour was exceptional compared to that of peers from other schools. The production was excellent, and we hope that the experience of seeing a play they had already read will enhance their eventual GCSE results.

Festival of Filey – Coffee Morning & Festival Concert

As part of the Festival of Filey we are delighted to be hosting a coffee morning with a choir performance 9.30-11am on Thursday 30th June. Followed in the evening by the Festival Concert starting at 7pm. We would welcome all to join us at these events. Look out for further details and tickets going on sale soon.

Congratulations!
