MIDDLE SCHOOL ATTENDANCE PROCEDURE
MORNING ATTENDANCE
1. Attendance is taken by the advisor promptly at 8:05 a.m.
2. If a student is absent from school, the parent (not the student) should notify Mr. Rubenacker or Ms. Tobia. (Middle School Administrative Assistant) between 7:45 and 8:30 a.m. Otherwise, a call home will be made to determine the reason for the absence.
3. Student arriving after this time must report to Ms. Tobia to sign in.
4. Busses that arrive late on a consistent basis will be reported to the parent so that the parent can contact the district transportation office.
5. Any partial absence involving less than a day must have the Principal’s approval in advance.
6. Students are allowed 5 latenessess, subsequent latenesses will result in a DP.
EARLY DISMISSAL
1. Any student who becomes ill at school should report to the school nurse. The student must let a teacher know that s/he is going to the nurse. Students may NOT call home and ask to be picked up. Only the nurse or the Principal can call home.
2. Parents of students who must leave school before 3:20 p.m. should contact the Administrative Assistant and advisor by phone or in writing at least one day before or the morning of the anticipated early dismissal. Please clearly identify the reason for the dismissal or early departure. All students must be signed out in the Middle School main office.
3. A parent/guardian must come to the Middle School office to pick up their child and sign the logbook.
AFTER SCHOOL
1. Students participating in after school athletics or other activities must be sure they have a late bus or arrange to be picked up promptly at the end of their game or activity.
2. Students staying after school for extra help or to watch an athletic event must sign in outside of the Middle School office before 1:00. Students are not permitted to leave campus during this time until they are picked up to go home.
3. Students wishing to go home with another student on his/her bus must get permission from the bus driver/company. Often the bus company will NOT allow a visitor on a bus.
4. Students who miss their bus should know how to reach a parent or other adult to arrange for transportation home. They must inform the Middle School teacher on bus duty of the situation.
5. Any student waiting for a ride home after 4:30 p.m. should wait near the Dolan Center where there is a teacher on duty.
BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS OF THE MIDDLE SCHOOL 2012-2013
You and your family have chosen Friends Academy. Like any community, the Middle School functions best when there is a clear set of moral and ethical principles, e.g. the "golden rules",that need to be recognized and accepted by the members of the community.
These principles include:
1. Students are to be honest about their work and in their relationships with others. It is only then that an atmosphere of trust can be established and maintained between students and teachers and among students themselves.
2. Students need to be sensitive to the needs of other people in their daily lives and in further reaching out to help others in the surrounding community.
3. Students need to be responsible for their behavior toward others and about the work that is expected of them.
4. Students need to respect their own property, the school's and that of others.
5. Students need to discover and use non-violent ways to resolve conflicts.
While we recognize that students will readily adhere to these principles, experience tells us that some students will exercise poor judgment at times. On these occasions, students must take responsibility and be held accountable for their actions. See discipline policies, Friends Academy Handbook Section XVII, K.

Dress Code for 2012-2013 School Year
The dress code at Friends Academy reflects a respect for the traditions and mission of the school and the belief that members of the school community are engaged in a serious and important endeavor. We require the tenet of simplicity to be at the core of our dress guidelines. School dress should reflect simplicity, be neat and clean, and imply modesty and moderation. Parents are asked to avoid trendy wear or status fashion. Parents are strongly encouraged to support the school’s policy by checking student’s dress each morning.
Advisors will check the student’s dress each morning during attendance, and special area teachers will be vigilant about observing adherence to the dress guidelines. If a student is found to be out of code, he or she will be asked to rectify the problem immediately. If the student is unable to resume appropriate dress, he or she will be reported to the Middle School Principal and a DP assigned. Continued concerns in this area would necessitate a parent and student meeting with the Principal.

Warm Weather Code
Weather permitting, warm weather dress will be announced as needed. Typically, warm weather dress code is honored in September and May/June.
Dress code specifications above the waist are the same as listed above.

Dress Down Days
Generally the first FRIDAY of the month is a DRESS DOWN DAY. If the first FRIDAY is during a vacation, dress down day will happen on the Friday of the week we return from vacation. On occasion, there will be dress down days that will be announced.
Acceptable
Modesty is the operative word in making a choice of clothing
Jeans, sneakers, t-shirts, shorts (long), sandals, sweatshirts, sweatpants, baseball caps
Not Acceptable
Anything that makes reference to war (ie. camouflage)
T-shirts with inappropriate language or advertising (ie. alcohol, drugs, sexual innuendos)
Tank or spaghetti strap tops
Tight fitting shirts/pants- that expose skin or underwear/no midriff showing
