Head of Teaching & Learning Services

POSITION RATIONALE

The role,Head of Teaching and Learning Services,exists to provide:

Effective system-level leadership and oversight of the following areas:

-Curriculum & Pedagogy K-12

-Learning Technology K-12

-Learning and Student WellbeingSupport

Support to the Director of Schools in the leadership and management of schools and the implementation of the priorities and policies of the Bishop.

The Head of Teaching and Learning Services has responsibility for a multi-disciplinary team of education specialists and psychologists.In carrying out this role, the Head of Teaching and Learning Services is responsible to the Director of Schools.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE AND COMPETENCIES

The Head of Teaching and Learning Servicesmust be a practising Catholic and possess:

  • Clear understanding of and personal commitment to the mission of Catholic schooling in the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle
  • Experience at senior school or system level
  • Post-graduate qualifications in educational leadership
  • Superior levels of organisation and communication
  • High order interpersonal and conflict resolution skills
  • Capacity to provide high level leadership and contribution to policy and decision-making
  • Sound knowledge ofcontemporary curriculum and learning support issues K-12
  • Capacity to provide direction in curriculum for schools
  • Capacity to provide direction and leadership for amulti-disciplinary team of education specialists and psychologists in Teaching and Learning Services.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  1. AS A SYSTEM LEADER
  • Demonstrate support and respect for all, encouraging the building of supportive school communities and ensuring that opportunities for individual and team contributions are optimised, recognised and celebrated
  • Deputise, as appropriate, for the Director of Schools
  • Act on behalf of the Director of Schools with full delegated authority to uphold the policies of the CSO
  1. AS A MEMBER OF THE CATHOLIC SCHOOLS OFFICE LEADERSHIP TEAM
  • Embrace the mission of the Catholic Schools Office, and model the values and appropriate professional and ethical behaviour
  • Formulate and implement the Strategic Plan for the Catholic Schools Office
  • Ensure high level communication with the Director of Schools and other members of the Leadership Team
  • Participate in and contribute to regular Leadership Team meetings
  • Provide high level advice and assistance to the Director of Schools and other members of the Leadership Team.

  1. AS HEAD OF TEACHING AND LEARNING SERVICES
  • Provide direction for schools with their focus on school improvement and student learning
  • Oversee the development and regular monitoring of strategic plans for Teaching & Learning Services to guide system and schools inteaching andlearning
  • Provide the overall coordination of staffing, services, programs and budgets in relation to Curriculum; Learning Technology; Learning and Wellbeing Support; and Counselling for schools
  • Provide responsibility for the operation and accountabilities for the following Teams:

-Curriculum

-Learning Technologies

-Student Support:Learning and Wellbeing/Counselling

  • Provide support and advice to Team Coordinators in Learning Support and Wellbeing/Counselling in carrying out their roles
  • Liaise with principals, primary and secondary, in the provision of up-to-date

adviceregarding education policies, trends, government agendas, Board of Studies (BOSTES)requirements, learning support directions and other relevant information

  • Manage specific government-funded and special project programs
  • Liaise with Catholic Education NSW, NSW Education Authority (NESA), and other school systems and agencies in relation to education and curriculum
  • Coordinate various program initiatives funded under the Commonwealth and State Government’s education agenda
  • Develop and monitor the implementation of specific policies related toteaching and learning
  • Assist with the system’s process for ongoing review and evaluation, Continuum of School Improvement (COSI) processesas Committee member and validator
  • Oversee the provision of appropriate PD opportunitiesfor schools aligned with

strategic plans and priorities in curriculum, learning technology and learning support

  • Develop appropriate processes for communication with schools and members of the various teams within Teaching & Learning Services
  • Chair relevant strategic committeesincludingAboriginal Education, Curriculum, Learning Support budget, Gifted Education, Library, and other committees as determined by the priorities of the System Strategic Plan
  • Participate as a member of other committees as determined by the priorities of the System Strategic Plan including COSI and Leadership Framework.
