I. / Primary Purpose of Position
The Head of Circulation is responsible for managing all facets of the circulation function of Mantor Library and its collection. The position coordinates interlibrary and intra-library loan services for the campus, as well as course reserves. The position also manages the student workers who handle routine library functions and operate the building at night, on weekends, and on snow days. As a member of the professional staff, this position is part of the Information Literacy Program, provides reference services, and contributes to library decision-making in policies, general procedures, and collection development.
II. / Essential Duties
1. / Leads, organizes, assesses, and evaluates the operations of the University Library's Access Services department. Develops, reviews, and assesses the effectiveness of departmental objectives, procedures, workflow, and service standards to insure collaboration and consistency regarding Access Services objectives, procedures and service standards
2. / Oversees hiring, training, scheduling, directing, and mentoring of student employees, developing individual goals and objectives to obtain departmental and Librarygoals, and conducts regular performance reviews of their success in meeting these goals
3. / Researches, designs, implements, and evaluates library instruction sessions for students, faculty, staff, and community patrons as part of the Information Literacy Program team. Provides extensive one-on-one instruction to patrons on an informal basis, typically at the Library Desk.
4. / Coordinates the efforts of the library staff in providing interlibrary loan, intra-system loan, and related services to the University community and other authorized users
5. / Uses ILS (III Sierra) to manage circulation duties in the library, including books, reserves, media, the technology loaner pool,
6. / Maintains constructive relations with the University Library's patrons through excellent communications, both routine and specialized, by representing policies and procedures consistently and fairly, and by developing proactive means to inform patrons of library policies, practices, changes, and opportunities
7. / Responsibility to regularly handle cash or cash equivalents
8. / Collaborates extensively with library staff and others on campus and sometimes beyond, to develop and implement policies, create programs, and promote increased awareness of library services
9. / Supervises and monitors the library's cash drawer activities, including collection of fines, replacement charges, courtesy card purchases, etc.
10. / Manages the use of the department's allocation of student work-study grant funds, and maintains records of the use and status of those funds
11. / Maintains current knowledge of new software applications for technologies including but not limited to e-Reserve, interlibrary loans, streaming video and checkout devices, and make recommendations for the purchase of hardware and software to support the service
12. / Coordinates the maintenance of the department's statistical records. Analyzes statistical data and prepares reports concerning the effectiveness of Access Services operations and outcomes
13. / Represents the library on committees within UMF and other cooperative committees and task forces external to university, and regional and national user groups for memberships and commercial products the library maintains, as appropriate
14. / Supervises the maintenance of security for the library's circulating collection
III. / Nonessential Duties
1. / Lifts and moves books, equipment, and mail deliveries; pushes book carts loaded with same. Transports materials between floors and between campuses
2. / Engages in professional reading, blogs, websites and organizations to maintain current knowledge of trends and best practices of access services, interlibrary loan and library technology trends
3. / Participates in listservs, conferences, and workshops related to access services
IV. / Supervisory Responsibilities
30+ Work-study Students: Interviews, Monitors workloads, approves time off, hires, evaluates, checks work, trains, assigns work, counsels, and disciplines.

VI. / Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Required:
1. / Extensive experience in the use of both the management and public functions of an integrated library automated system, such as Innovative Interfaces, OCLC bibliographic utilities, and standard office productivity software applications in a networked environment
2. / Solid working knowledge of the use of Google Docs and Microsoft Office
3. / Exemplary organizational skills, including project coordination skills
4. / Strong leadership, analytical and problem solving skills
5. / Superior written, verbal and interpersonalcommunication skills, and demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective, positive working relationships with colleagues, faculty, and library staff
6. / Ability to effectively train, supervises, evaluate and work with student assistants
7. / Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a team member within a changing work environment with minimal supervision
8. / Demonstrated ability to tolerate frequent interruptions and still be flexible and focused in order to meet high standards of quality in both accuracy and attention to detail and within deadlines
9. / Ability to operate all library and office equipment, operate computer keyboards located on tables and counters ranging between 30 and 42 inches in height; retrieve or reshelf library materials located on shelves ranging in height from 3 to 6 feet 7 inches; lift books, equipment and mail deliveries up to 40 pounds; load and push book carts weighing up to 50 pounds
10. / Advanced knowledge of circulation, reserve, and interlibrary lending operations, including current best practices
11. / Demonstrated strong commitment to responsive and innovative library public services, a positive service attitude, and qualities of initiative, good judgment, and resourcefulness in pursuit of institutional goals
12. / Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to clearly communicate verbally and in writing and to interact in an effective and courteous manner with students, faculty, staff, and with a wide range of public patrons
13. / Ability to work as an effective team member in a manner that fosters collaboration and cooperation
Preferred:
1. / Ability and desire to keep pace with technological advances and the ability to learn new software applications
VII. / Qualifications
Required:
1. / Professional degree (MLS, or equivalent) from an ALA-accredited program
2. / Demonstrated abilities in the areas of organization, management, and interpersonal communication
3. / Reasonably demonstrated knowledge of library skills gained through professional employment or advanced library science course work from an ALA accredited institution
4. / Experience in the supervision of student workers and/or other employees
5. / Experience in an academic or large public library’s access services department
6. / Proficiency in the use of an integrated library computer system, including its circulation, reserve and interlibrary loan operations.
Preferred:
1. / Three to five years of experience working in an academic library
2. / Experience with Innovative Interfaces, Inc. integrated library system
3. / Experience with access services in a consortia environment
