“Life is often compared to a marathon, but I think it is more like being a sprinter; long stretches of hard work punctuated by brief moments in which we are given the opportunity to perform at our best.”

-Michael Johnson

Philosophy

In sports, as leaders, we are here to create an environment that allows athletes to build self-confidence, develop character values, guide in making positive choices, and learn how to be a good teammate and person. Through the development of these skills, each athlete will be able to build a foundation for success. A successful team is a group of individuals driven by a common goal. Our ultimate goal as a program is to be the very best that we can be!

Ten Commandments of a Classy Athlete:

  1. You will give 100% effort at all times
  2. Place your teammates before yourself. You cannot succeed without them.
  3. Value competition.
  4. Respect your opponent. He/she is a competitor like you.
  5. Do not boast of your accomplishments nor make excuses for your failures. (Run your feet and not your mouth.)
  6. Respect the rules and ethics of the sport as well as the officials and their decisions.
  7. Honor your family, academics, and the sport in that order.
  8. Never do anything to embarrass yourself, your team, your coaches, your school, your family, or your community. DO THE RIGHT THING!
  9. You, in the eyes of an outsider, are an athlete 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Be conscious of your actions and image.
  10. Have discipline, concentration, patience, and trust in the program.

“The glory of sport comes from dedication, determination, and desire. Achieving success and personal glory in athletics has less to do with wins and losses than it does with learning how to prepare yourself so that at the end of the day, whether on the track or in the office, you know that there was nothing more you could have done to reach your ultimate goal.”

Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Olympian

In other words- NO REGRETS!!!

Red Lodge High School Track Staff guidelines to help you do the right thing:

  1. BE ON TIME: Track practice will begin at 4:00 PM every day. You will need to be done with the training room at that time. We will warm up every day as a team. If you are late, you will have make-up running. Continuous tardiness can mean removal from the team. Attendance will be taken every day.
  1. ATTENDANCE POLICY: Practice is the key to improvement, so attendance is mandatory. Athletes must have 10 days of practice before they can compete in a track meet. Athletes must compete in at least 2 meets to be eligible for the District Meet in May.
  2. Any absence for which the coach is not notified in advance is considered an unexcused absence.
  3. On the first unexcused absence, the coach will give the athlete a verbal warning.
  4. On the second unexcused absence, the athlete will miss the next meet.
  5. In the event of a third unexcused absence, additional consequences will occur.
  6. Absence the day before a meet (without talking to the coach first) means NO competition; however, you must attend the meet and help in any way possible.
  7. The coach reserves the right to modify this policy at her discretion.
  1. DRESS APPROPRIATELY AT ALL TIMES: School dress code will be enforced. You will be required to purchase sweats at the beginning of the season (these can be used for each track season you participate in) that will be worn during practice and for meets. I feel it is important to look and act like a team. You will be able to take sweats off when weather permits. You should also bring hat, gloves, extra clothing just in case.
  1. WE WILL REPRESENT RLHS WITH CLASS AT MEETS: You will behave and represent yourself, coaches, family and community in a proper fashion at meets. You will leave team camp areas cleaner than you found them.
  1. LETTERING REQUIREMENTS: An athlete much earn 8 points in varsity competition in one season or qualify for competition at the divisional meet.
  1. TRAVELING TO AND FROM MEETS: All athletes are required to ride the bus to the meets. It is also recommended that they ride the bus home from meets. Athletes are only allowed to ride home with their parents. If an athlete chooses to ride home with their parents, the parent will need to sign that athlete out with a coach.
  1. DISMISSAL/SUSPENSION FROM THE TEAM: Behavior that brings discredit to Red Lodge High School, the athletic program, the team and/or teammates may be grounds for dismissal or suspension from the team.
  1. CELL PHONE USE: You can have them and use them until we have one misuse. If we have one misuse during the season I will be collecting all cell phones the rest of the season. There are no electronic devices allowed onto any track that we will be participating at. They should stay in your bags at all times.
  1. CURFEW POLICY: Curfew will be 10:00 PM on school nights and on nights prior to a meet. Curfew on the weekends will beMidnight (12:00 AM).
  1. SUBSTANCE ABUSE POLICY/GRADES: We will follow and strictly enforce the substance abuse policy as laid out in the high school handbook. Each athlete will be drug tested the first two weeks of the season. After the initial testing, random test will take place throughout the season.
