Mr. John A. Hanson is currently employed with Lakeshore Technical College, Cleveland, Wisconsin, as a full-time hazardous materials and emergency management instructor in the Public Safety Division. He has developed the courses for an Emergency Management Associate Degree, and began instructing those courses for the college in September of 2007. In addition, Mr. Hanson continues to teach industrial and environmental emergency response, as well as courses required to maintain safe working environments. He is an Occupational Safety and Health Administration-approved 10- and 30-Hour Course instructor.

Mr. Hanson has a diverse background in hazardous materials/waste management and emergency management operations. He is a Certified Emergency Manager with the State of Wisconsin and an Emergency Manager with the U.S. Air Force. His expertise includes competency as a Hazardous Materials technician and Emergency Manager – having achieved the requirements in the private sector as well as in the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Hanson is also a master sergeant with the 128th Air Refueling Wing, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he is currently the superintendent of the base Civil Engineering, Emergency Management Office. His combined active duty and Air Force National Guard experience exceeds 18 years.

Mr. Hanson has provided training to military personnel who respond to and mitigate natural, technical, and intentional disasters and emergencies. He taught classes for deploying military personnel on the use of protective equipment; maintaining contingency plans; and hazardous material training. He also provided emergency management expertise to base leadership who respond to and manage disasters. After the terrorist attacks of September 2001, he worked as a civilian contractor for the 61st Civil Engineering Squadron, Los Angeles Air Force Base, California. As the Readiness manager, Mr. Hanson’s duties included oversight of the base emergency preparedness program. His specific areas of responsibility included emergency planning; anti-terrorism and force protection classes; conducting threat vulnerability and risk assessments of the military installation; and conducting hazardous materials awareness and operational emergency responder training.

Mr. Hanson holds a bachelor’s degree in disaster and emergency management from American Military University and is currently attending University of Wisconsin–River Falls to complete a master’s degree in education in the winter of 2012.
