In Reply to: Valentine, b. 1745, Germany, to PA by Marilyn Roth of 1281
Marilyn--I'm a 7th-generation descendant of Simon Hay. My grandmother gave me a copy of the Hay family history she had compiled over her lifetime. I'm "picking up where she left off", and wanting to fill in gaps, or confirm info that the book contains.
I'm curious about Michael Hay and Barbara Booher (parents of Valentine 1775-1852), since this is info my book does not have. Do you know who this Michael's ancestors are? I show a Michael b.16 June 1790 in Berlin, PA to Johann Michael HOH (b. 29 Oct 1761, Scharrhof; d. bf 1832, Nelson Co. KY). Am hoping you have info that will explain one or both of these Michael's.
In addition, I am interested in finding more about the Valentine that you referenced who is supposed to be the one that arr. in Phila. in 1767 with Simon and Francis, then returned to Germany. All of the information that I have shows that the Valentine who came with Simon and Francis was their brother Valentine, b.7 Feb 1735. Can you shed more light here? I have tried to find the "Sally" or "Sallee" ship manifests online hoping that might help, but have been unsuccessful.
Also, I have a copy of what appears to be the church records of Johann Michael HOH and Anna Elisabetha Schneider from Labach showing their birthdates and places, parents' names, as well as their sons' names and birthdates (Johann Valentin, Johann Adam, Johann Simon, and Franziscus). It's recorded in German. Is this a document you have seen or are interested in? I'm looking in to having an acquaintance translate several sentences that I don't understand.
Thanks for any info you can provide.
Carol

Thanks for the kind words, but I'm not an expert on the HAY family of Bedford Co. I just have some resources and helpful correspondents. For background, there is a booklet prepared by David Robert HAY, Somerset, PA, 1983, on Simon HAY. He credits Dr. Richard HOH of Switzerland & Otto MULLER & Sibylle BRENGEL of Gerhardsbrunn, Germany. Mr. MULLER compiled a history of Gerhardsbrunn, and Ms. BRENGEL & Dr. HOH translated. All four of the above are descendants of Simon, b. 21 Oct. 1682, Hoheinod, about ten kilometers southeast of Gerhardsbrunn, Sickinger Hohe, Palatinate. Simon was grandfather of the immigrant Simon HAY. There was a Hans HOH of Gerhardsbrunn by 1600, possibly an ancestor of the Simons. About 1635, the village was burned during the thirty-year war, and the families that survived went to the Netherlands for asylum. Prince Franz von Sickinger and some families returned to the vicinity about 1669. Simon HOH / HAY helped with a major rebuilding of the village about 1700.

If you studied yesterday's names, you MAY be able to follow this. :-) I can only help eliminate some of the "other" HAY family. These are other sons and grandchildren of Simon HAY / HÖH, b. 1682. Richard E. Hay of Waynesboro, VA, sent his information. I'll just use middle names, since the first names are repeated. He spelled Valentine without the final e.
(Hans or Johann) Valentin HOH/HAY (1708 - 1802) m. M. Margaretha MONSINGER / MONTZINGER (1712 - 1760). They had
A. Barbara (1731 - 1732)
J. Adam (1733 - 1789) m. Anna Maria SCHNEIDER, b. 1735
A. Eva, b. 1735, m. Theobald ZIMMER, had A. Marg., who m. J. Adam HOH.
J. Daniel, b. 1739
A. Maria, b. 1742, m. J. Heinrich RUCH
J. Valentin (1745 - will pr. 28 Aug. 1813) m. Catherine
J. Simon (1747 - 1836), m. A. Eva MANG, b. 1743
infant, b & d 1750
Margaretha, m. J. Adam JUNG / YOUNG.
J. Michael HOH / HAY (1711 - 73) m. A. Elisabeth SCHNEIDER, b. 1715. This is the line given yesterday, including "Pioneer Simon," who came to America in 1767 with "Frantz" & Valentin. Frantz was on a 1771 tax list for Brothers Valley, Bedford Co., PA. Simon first lived in western Maryland.
J. Adam HAY (1717 - 1803) m. A. Eva REB (1716 - 1760). They had
J. Abraham
J. Valentin, b. 1745, m. A. Maria PFEIFER (1752 - 1796), came over with cousins but returned in 1775 and stayed during the Revolution
A. Elisabeth, b. 1747, m. J. Michael MONTZINGER
A. Maria, b. 1749, m. J. Simon REB
J. Adam (1754 - 1832) m. A. Ottilia SCHNEIDER (1755 - 1795).
J. Theobald (1719 - 1780), m. A. Maria TRAUTMANN (1718 - 1777). They had
A. Maria, b. 1739, m. J. Heinrich KETTENRING
A. Margaretha (1742 - 1791) m. J. Melchior HEINTZ, d. 1784
J. Adam (1746 - 1786) m. A. Maria REB
A. Barbara (1749 - 1790), m. J. Valentin STAHL
J. Michael (1752 - 1817) m. A. Barbara SCHAFER (1751 - 1824)
J. Valentin (1756 - 1814) m. A. Elisabeth ZIMMER (1767 - 1843).
J. Simon (1728 - 1771) m. A. Margaretha GERHARD (1730 - 1817). They had
J. Adam, (1752 - 1835) m1. cousin A. Margaretha ZIMMER; m2. M. Elisabeth UTZINGER
M. Margaretha, b. 1755, m. J. Valentin MONTZINGER/MUNZINGER.
A. Maria, b. 1758, m. J. Adam ZIMMER
A. Elisabetha (1762 - 1769)
A. Ottilia, b. 1767, m. J. Daniel FUHRMANN.
J. Simon HAY (1747 - 1836) who m. A. Eva MANG appears to be of Greenfield Twp., will pr. 20 May 1836, daughters Eaveagreds, Reachel & Susana.
Notice that most of the information you have does not connect to descendants of Simon. There is a note on the sheet for Simon (1742 - 1842) that says another Simon had a will, 27 Dec. 1837, Somerset Co., PA, Courthouse, "Old Wills, 1837." Maybe that one connects to Simon of Woodbury/Woodberry Twp., 40 in 1789, with (presumed) brother Michael, 35 in 1789, b. ca. 1754. Their descendants appear to have belonged to the German Baptist Brethren Church (Dunkard), while the descendants of Simon were German Reformed.
Roger RHOADS says that Mary NEY left HAY research papers at the Brookville Historical Society. Roger also says that Simon HAY (ca. 1749 - 1815?*), had sons
Simon HAY (ca. 1773 - ca. 1815?*), who m. Barbara MARTIN (1785 - 1867)
Valentine HAY (1778 - 1813) who m. Catharina _.
That makes the family of Michael HAY (1754 - 1816) & Barbara BOOHER (1754 - 1817):
Valentine (19 Apr. 1775 - 5 Oct. 1852) m. Esther MARTIN (1787 - 1873)
Jacob HAY (1780 - 21 Apr. 1818, Montg. Co., OH) m. Mary RHODES (178_ - 1818)
John (30 Jan. 1785 - 15 Feb. 1845) m. Elizabeth (1785/90 - 1850+)
Barbara (1789 - 1816)
Catherine (1791 - 1835) m. Fredk. HARTLE (1786 - 1861). [It was definitely Cath. rather than Barb. who m. Fredk. HARTLE.]
Brothers Valentine, Jacob, & John HAY, with Daniel & Simon HAY apparently moved by June 1814, to near Dayton, Montgomery Co., OH. [*Another source says that Simon HAY died about that time, & widow Barbara [MARTIN] HAY and children went to Ohio about 1818. Maybe the younger Simon died in 1815, & the father in 1837?] Since Simon was apparently their cousin, was Daniel a brother of Simon? We also have an unidentified Daniel HAY that m. Sarah Jane KENSINGER, and a Michael HAY that m. Margaret STIMAN that must connect somewhere.
Mary (RHODES), [ca. 1784/9? - Apr. 1818], wf/o Jacob HAY, was apparently accompanied when they began the trip to Ohio by her parents, Arma K. & George RHODES, but George RHODES died at Pittsburgh. Arma RHODES was of Wolf Creek when she requested administration of her husband's estate, Montg. Co., OH, Je. 1814. Nearby there was later a Hay's Store / Hay's Corner, and the Hay - Pfoutz Cemetery.
Thanks for the information you provided. I hope this helps a bit.
Hay family of Bedford county, Pennsylvania

Afternoon Marilyn,
I noticed that on the GenForum Hay list you seemed to be the most knowledgeable on the Hay families of Bedford and Somerset counties in Pennsylvania. I am presently doing an article for Brethren Roots for which I am the editor and I am hoping for some help. Also I may be able to help you in the process. Also I am not a Hay descendant but I work on families that came from what is termed Morrison's Cove in Bedford county to Montgomery county, Ohio where I was raised. The Hay family is one that I have adopted as one of my fun families - at least until I have scraped the bottom of the barrel. I should also state that this information is from primary research and in every case, except for estates, deeds and census records was scanned from the original court documents by myself.
The first documentable reference I can find in Bedford county for the Hay family of Morrison's Cove was in 1775 on a road petition. On this petition Michael Höh signed his name in German for a road that today leads from Everett, Pa. to Roaring Spring, Pa. While at that time it was called Frankstown township it shortly got split into Frankstown and Woodberry townships. Then in 1776 when the petition was again presented to the court Michael is not listed though most of the other names are still there. Some of the signatures are obviously that of the author of the petitions but Michael's was his.
The next time I can definitely place Michael there is in 1789 when he appears in Woodberry township with what is presumably a brother by the name of Simon. There is a special list for this year that shows that Simon was born in about 1749 and Michael in about 1754.
In 1790 the census for Woodberry township shows that Michael had himself, 3 males under 16(Valentine, Jacob & John) and his wife Barbara Booher(d/o Bartholomew). "Samuel" Hay had himself and 4 females living in his house. And I looked personally at the film and it is clearly written as Samuel Hay.
They are both shown in 1791 on the tax lists. In 1792 they are there again but at this time a single freeman Valentine Hay appears. While one would suspect the is the son of Michael Hay who moved to Montgomery county, Ohio this is not the case. Solely based upon the ages of Simon and Michael I have "set" this Valentine as a son of Simon even though the 1790 census does not support this. The reason will become apparent later.
In 1793 Valentine, s/o Simon, is shown to have been a stiller with one horse but was not taxed. Simon was owner of 100 acres, 2 horses and 1 cow and finally Michael had the same as Simon though his valuation was $60.00 instead of Simon's $57.00. There is no valuation for Simon's son Valentine. He does however appear on a list of male residents with an unknown Daniel Hay.
The next set of tax records I own was for 1796. Michael owned 200 acres, 2 cabins, 1 barn, 2 horses and 3 cows. Simon had 180 acres, 1 cabin, 1 barn and 3 cows. Daniel Hay is shown as a married man with 50 acres, cabin and a cow. Simon's Valentine owned 50 acres on which he had a still. Again he was not taxed and this may mean that he was part of the militia.
In 1797 Michael, Simon, Daniel and Valentine are again shown. But now Valentine is married. That this is not Michael's son Valentine can be demonstrated as such because Valentine did not marry Esther Martin until early 1805. Where Michael's son Valentine for this year is not known by me.
Taxes for 1798 Michael, Simon, Daniel and Valentine are much the same as in 1797. However, Michael's Valentine now makes his appearance as a single freeman. It is apparently this Valentine who also appears as a "recently arrived" man.
In 1799 Simon is shown to have been a tailor but an occupation for his son Valentine is not stated. Michael and his son Valentine are again shown as residents. Daniel had cleared 9 acres of a 50 acre tract and owned 1 horse and cow.
The year of 1800 contains both tax and census information though they are misleading. Daniel hay had 2 males under 10, 2 males 10-16, 2 males 16-26, 1 male over 45, 1 female under 10, 2 females 16-26 and 1 female over 45. I read this is as either 2 sons and their wives or 2 females and their husbands or a combination. Daniel is on the tax list but nothing special. I would therefore guess that he was born before 1755.
Michael Hay, brother to Simon and father of Valentine(Mont. Co., Ohio) census is as follows; 1 male 10-16(John), 1 male 16-26(Jacob), 1 male over 45(Michael), 2 females under 10(Catherine & Barbara), 1 female over 45(Barbara). Where Daniel(b. abt. 1791) was is unknown. Also the ages of Catherine and Barbara are incorrect. Tax is about the same.
Michael Hay Jr. had 1 male 16-26 and 1 female 16-26. Who this guy is in unknown but he does not appear on the taxes. Could it be a reference actually to Valentine Hay, son of Simon? Who knows but the name Michael only if used in reference to Michael Sr.
The final census record is for Simon and he had 1 male over 45, 1 female 10-16, 1 female 16-26 and 1 female over 45. Simon's taxes have not changed.
In 1802 the taxes have again basically stayed the same but there now appears three Valentines. Valentine, son of Michael is listed as a single freeman, Simon's son appear inthe regular assessment and finally there is another Valentine Hay who shows in the single freeman.
In 1804 Daniel no longer is a resident of Bedford county, Pa. and where he had moved is unknown to me. It may be that he had moved to Huntington county, Pa. which was about a half mile away from where deeds indicated the Hays lived. However it is about 1803 that a Daniel Hay supposedly shows up in Cambria county, Pa. which as the crow flies was only about 15-25 miles away. Several other families, Ulrey(Ulrich), Martin, Knee amongst a couple, also moved up there.
Simon, still a tailor, is shown owning 17 acres of land, 1 horse and 2 cows. Michael had 225 acres, 1 horse and 2 cows. Michael's Valentine was taxed for 1 horse and 1 cow. Simon's Valentine had a still, 98 acres, 1 horse and 3 cows.
Here comes the reason why I think that Simon, Michael and Daniel each had a son named Valentine. Michael's son Valentine is still shown as a single man which fits because he did not get married until 1805. Then there is a tax record for the married Valentine who was a stiller and son of Simon. Appearing for the first time is a third Valentine shown as a single freeman and probably one of the 16-26 men in Daniel's house on the 1800 census. This third Valentine had 1 horse and was taxed for it and himself as a single man.
However in 1805 while Michael and Simon are living in Morrison's Cove there is only what I can assume was Simon's son Valentine who paid taxes. Michael's Valentine is shown to have been a member of a militia and was allowed a tax exemption up to $5.00 which means that he owned no tax. Michael's son John was also a member of this militia and is the first time that he shows.
