  1. New Business

a.Design Phase, Castle High School

Project Manager Trisha Lagaso Goldberg presented the recommendation for the Design Phase of Solomon Enos’ commission art project for Castle High School. She said the artist proposes a mural depicting human forms that are intended to symbolize forces of nature embodied by the Hawaiian “ancestors” known as Lono, Kū, Hina, Kāne, and Kanaloa. The “ancestors” reinforce the notion of a familial like relationship that can exist between humans and nature and underscore the power of working together.

She said the mural dimensions are approximately 14 feet wide by 20 feet high, covering a total of 280 square feet. Design Phase approval isrequired by SFCA contract. Project to be completed and installed by December 31, 2016.

Commissioner Moore motioned to approve the design phase recommendation for Castle High School, seconded by Commissioner Warner and the motion was carried unanimously.

Concept Phase, Pukalani Elementary School

Project Manager Trisha Lagaso Goldberg reportedon the ConceptPhase for artist Calley O’Neil at Pukalani Elementary School. The proposed stained glass mosaic mural for B-Building, which faces Iolani Street at Pukalani Elementary School will make a significatnt impact on the public. She noted a stained glass mosaic mural approximately 17 feet (h) x 58 feet (w).

The inspiration for this mural centers around the watershed in upcountry Maui. Key visual elements include: three trees which used to thurive in the area (‘Ohia, Koa, and Wiliwili), Haleakala, Lilinoe (symbolizing water in all forms) chanting about water and native forests, and a student/learning.

Commissioner Moore commented that the artist is really engaged with the committee.

Commissioner Moore moved to approve the Concept Phase for Pukalani Elementary School, seconded by Commissioner Warner. The motion was carried unanimously.

b.Artist Recommendations: Hale Kula Elementary School

Ms. Lagaso Goldberg requested approval of the artist recommendation for Hale Kula Elementary School. She said Hale Kula Elementary School is in Oahu district. She noted that the Committee listed four artists in order of preference, but they only recommended one artist, Kim Duffett.

Ms. Lagaso Goldbergsaid the main reason why the committee chose artist Kim Duffett is because he did some sculpture in bronze work at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and exhibited his work in galleries including the wall mural at the Courtyards at Punahou condominium, exterior installation of bronzes at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Ali’i Courtyard at the Hilton, and also completed a commission for the Hilton’s Tapa Tower entrance with the bronze fountains of Iolani Luahine and Alfred Apaka.
