RED RIBBON WEEK October 30-November 3rd, 2017
Red Ribbon Week is a week to celebrate making healthy choices. In 1988, Congress proclaimed the first National Red Ribbon Week. Today, schools across the United States are involved in the annual Red Ribbon Week celebration and awareness campaign against the use of alcohol, tobacco, drugs, and violence prevention. This year’s theme: Your Future Is Key, So Stay Drug Free.
Throughout the Washougal School District, schools will be participating in activities to celebrate Red Ribbon Week. At Hathaway Elementary, we will celebrate students, staff and families making healthy choices. One way we celebrate the week is by having themes for each day:
Monday, Oct. 30: “The first step to healthy choices” ~ Wear Sneakers Day
On this day we want you to pledge to make one new healthy choice during this week. It may be to eat a new fruit or vegetable, choose white milk instead of chocolate at lunch, limit your sugar intake (only one piece of candy per day), wear your helmet every time you are on wheels, or play for 60 minutes a day.
Tuesday, Oct. 31st: “We aren’t afraid of healthy choices” ~ Wear a Costume Day
Wear your favorite costume. Show that you are not afraid of trying something new and making healthy choices. Today we will “scare” unhealthy choices away.
Wednesday, Nov. 1st:
“Wake-up to healthy choices” ~ Wear Pajamas Day
Make this a healthy day from start to finish. Eat a healthy breakfast, make sure to get some exercise in, and avoid too many sweet treats!
Thursday, Nov. 2nd: “Be on a Drug Free Team” ~ Wear your favorite team’s gear or jersey!
Making healthy choices is much easier when you have support and are making choices together as a team. Take the time to make a goal together with your team, whether that is family, friends or community to make healthy choices and say “no” to unhealthy choices.
Friday, Nov. 3rd:
“Hathaway spirit” ~ Wear Red Day
The government recommends that school age children eat between 1 and 2 cups of fruit and 1 ½ to 2 ½ cups of vegetables each day. This is a great day to try to eat a new fruit or vegetable or add some RED, orange, yellow, green, blue or purple to your plate.
The number one reason kids give for
not using drugs is their parents.
Red Ribbon Week is the ideal time, as is every day of the year, for people and communities to unite and take a visible stand against drugs and focus on healthy choices. The National Family Partnership ( , which coordinates many Red Ribbon activities, is a great web site for further information and family support. Some other websites that parents and kids can go to are NFL’s Play60 program ( Let’s move, the campaign by Michelle Obama to combat childhood obesity, ( and Kids Health, ( a website all about different childhood health issues.
Red Ribbon Week is….
A time for gratitude for all the lives that remain drug free.
A time to pledge to live a healthy, safe and drug free life.
A time to actively choose healthy choices for you and your family.
A time to remember those we have lost in the fight against drugs and alcohol abuse.
A time to communicate openly with your children about your family values and expectations.
A time to celebrate all the positive choices we make on a daily basis.
Join us in celebrating Red Ribbon Week. Our children have the right to grow up drug free—we have the responsibility to make that happen.
