Harvard Chan Student Association Meeting with Dean Williams02/14/17
- Thank you for the pro-activeness of administration!
- Marshall Gants to do a launching event around the sharing and understanding of public narrative and social movement. This would set us up for how we can go through a set of workshops/smaller activities
- As an institution, they can not purposely engage in partisan politics, but many of these issues are non-partisan.
- Due to the shortness of our programs, a teach-in might be better placed on a day where class in not cancelled (i.e. on a Saturday).
- Checking in on updates from previous proposals
- Mental Health Counselor
- Had a great meeting with UHS and Nancy Turnbull/Amy
- One challenge is the physical facility—use an office here when needed as a solution
- And would meet some need
- Currently in talks with a company that does this kind of work for a pilot with us in the space we have identified.
- The law school just recently hired a part-time person housed at the health school but over looked by the mental health services.
- Atrium Portraits
- Coming up with what that is important to hold
- Have all of the current proposals and the diversity of them
- This task-force is hoping to narrow down to a few options before May 4th
- DrPH funding
- Question: Could there be a task-force set up?
- Academic Dean Karen Emmons to contact
- Study Period
- Good next steps to progress the issue
- Pull out the calendar and calculate the number of teaching days that would be compromised
- Would it be at the end of the quarter, or semester?
- Most likely semester
- Must be headed by Nancy Turnbull
- Must take to Committee for Academic degrees and another group to review the impact of the education and instructional requirements with the faculty council
- This would be a big chain in getting this completed, including the registrar offices
- Give a one page proposal in an effort to eliminate as few class days as possible
- How would this impact the ongoing discussion around shortened class blocks?
- Advisor/Advisee relationships
- MPH have a particular problem because it is often outside the scope of the professors expertise
- This is especially true in the last 4 years in academic changes
- Would need to be re-tasking the academic chairs
- SM students have better relationships if they are able to find and keep an advisor, which is sometimes an issue
- Through the cohesion, accountability and expectations from the department chairs to the faculty in improving quality of advising
- Indices to be tracked at each level
- Work in progress, part of overall
- In new programs, advisors do not sometimes have a grasp on the class requirements or what was needed academically
- The middle levels needs to be the academic coordinatorsfaculty directly involvedfull faculty
- For degree auditing issues and the more technical issues, work with the academic coordinator. For more career or research issues, work with the advisor.
- Dean’s Dinner
- Proposals
- Community Engagement Concerns—worked in program requirements/course requirements
- Cross Registration Issues—Short and Long Term solutions
- Technical: Increasing bandwidth
- Information: more clear communication
- There is a new cross registration portal that will be ready for the fall which should help with some of the transactional issues
- Plan of action when political issues affect our students
- Specifically, unable to come back, unable to finish research, those who lose funding (EPA/CDC), mental health impact, students who want to be engaged
- What we want it to look like
- Possible to also talk about tying up loose ends and update of where we are.
- The room set up—can we do round tables?
- Open with update of progress that has been made
- Need-Based Scholarships Proposal
- See posted below these notes on the website
