Old Business:

Huron: motion to open discussion on S.10-A-020, no objections. SAC production of the Red Black Book, copies floating around and representatives of SAC here tonight.

Ruparel: discrepancies between books?

SAC: Black one is from last year, red book is from two years ago

Ridder: total cost of putting book together?

SAC: 2010 estimated cost is $10,000

Ridder: we are being asked to pay for almost 15% of the book and we are only getting 1.5% of the book for advertisement . Working in the Air Force, I was the editor of the newspaper. Space on the outside covers is the most expensive.

Payne: different financial tiers?

SAC: $1000 sponsorship for 1/3 of a page, no acknowledgment at new student commencement, SG would receive 5 copies of the book

Marzec: freshmen in their tribunal would have never noticed SG advertisements in the book, freshmen didn’t approve spending so much money on the books even if we did get a half of a page

Hart: would you be willing to make a deal for the benefits of the $1500 for the price of the $1000 or would you rather take $0?

SAC: we would be willing to make a deal

Lolli: this should not be viewed as a marketing tool for SG. This is an opportunity for SG to educate freshmen students about the University.

Groh: two or three of younger members have talked about this book as a valuable resource and it is increasing the pride at the University. Valuable for SG to invest in.

Edgar: more about supporting what the book is all about rather than marketing SG. The investment is for freshmen and the university. No reason why SG and SAC should be battling. SG should step up to the plate to support this.

Dulle: this will go to every freshman

Penick: Red & Black book is a great tradition. If we fund this, there is a potential that a student could be stuck paying twice because they are paying for student dues and also buying it at the bookstore if they did not get a copy at the new student convocation. Can all students get it for free, not only freshmen?

Landon: Very helpful information, great book. We should look at what the freshmen will get out of it, not what SG will get out of it.

Ealy: commends SAC for the book. $1500 is not bad, we do have the room for it in our budget.

Lolli: Use the half page to support Proudly Pennies

SAC: you can approve the page before it goes to print

Miller: do these books get out to our branch campuses?

Lolli: all students can attend convocation

SAC: you can go to the alumni center at any time and pick up a book

Ealy: Move to close discussion, discussion closed

Huron: Move to pass S.10-A-020

25-2-2, S.10-A-020 passes

Janek: moves to open discussion on S. 10-E-008

Made 5 amendments: in first section 1.1.4 included requirement of spreadsheets for petitions, election packets available on SG website, elections conducted online, appeals must be filed within three business days instead of two, amended bill 1.3.1-6 should have been 1.3.1.-6F

Ridder: motion to close discussion

Janek: moves to call to question S. 10-E-008, no objections

S. 10-E-008 passes with a vote of 28-0-0

New Business:

Lolli: moves to table S. 10-A-022, no objections

Ridder: moves to open discussion on S. 10-R-012, no objections

Not in favor of this bill, open to suggestions. Other schools have gown rental programs. Sean Tubb is a full-time paid professional; he cannot endorse the bill because they will not be saving money which is what sustainability is all about. People are not going to wear these gowns more than once, and they probably will dispose of them as they normally would.

Huron: physical differences?

Stephens: fabric is softer and is better material

Penick: old gowns look really chincy

Stephens: Jostens was making a sales pitch for a nicer product. Do students want to pay extra for the added benefits? Fabric decomposes better. If you purchase it, they will donate $1 to a sustainable cause. Do students want to pay more for a more premium product?

Quinn: how much? $36 vs. $48. How many other schools have adopted this? List being passed around. $12 is worth it. Being innovative and on the cutting edge of things is worth it.

Edgar: Head of Sustainability is against it says a lot. If you sign up to be a member of the Alumni Association before you graduate, you can get a cap and gown for free. We should look into the rental program?

Lolli: how much is it to join the Alumni Association?

Huron: $25

Lolli: recommends voting against this bill

Ridder: moves to call to question S. 10-R-012, no objections

S. 10-R-012 fails with a vote of 1-28-0

Ruparel: moves to open discussion on S. 10-E-009

Concerning diversity outreach, 5 office hours for at-large senators to go visit student diversity groups that do not get reached out to by SG

Ridder: we have been doing a good job thus far of reaching out to everyone, interested to hear what at-large senators have to say about it because they are being affected, does not add any office hours

Hart: creates a more rich sense of diversity because it forces at-large senators to get out on campus, even if this is not enforceable—it does not add any hours. We can raise the bar higher for next year.

Edgar: comments from Senator Rooney—more in favor of Hart’s ideas, tough to enforce, more of a resolution bill rather than an enactment bill

Penick: great idea, important for us to promote diversity, great to encourage this, not personally against this, do we want to force this upon people? We want people who will get involved because they want to, not because they have to. Awesome idea for people to interact with all constituents, in more support of it as a resolution bill rather than an enactment bill

Maull: this will help us follow UC21, even if people feel like they “have to go” it will open people’s eyes

Miller: as a resolution bill, we use it as a lip service rather than an action. This will be more action oriented, we are not stating specifics or where people have to go but it will still encourage this

Huron: supports this being an enactment bill for it to really make a difference

Hitt: amount of hours? Good for at-large senators to go somewhere they would not normally be a part of

Ruparel: 6 hours a week, total of 60 hours per quarter

Ridder: we can change the demographics that are underrepresented on SG

Ruparel: at-large senators would not be able to go to meetings of groups they are already a part of

Edgar: Hidt brings up a great point about the 11th clause, pay attention to all demographics that are underrepresented—commuters, out of state students, etc.

Ridder: tabled as an enactment bill

Ruparel: motion to table S. 10-E-009, tabled.

Hart: Motion to move into Executive Session

Vote of 26-3-0
