Dear Fellow Scouters:
On behalf of the St. Louis Orienteering Club and the Greater St. Louis Area Council I would like to thank you for attending the 16th John Smerek Scout Orienteering Festival. This year the storms came and went before the event started. In all 226 scouts and scouters from forty different units participated on a cool and cloudy Saturday.
Attached are the results from the 2018 Scout Orienteering Festival Score-O competition based on the punch cards received at the finish. The participants were divided into categories according to age, adult and adult/youth. I am sending awards to all the participants. One punch card did not have the ages of the scouts on them, so I could not properly place them in the results. The punch card that the girls lost by control 18 was turned in, so I gave them full credit. I apologize for any misspelled names. The lost and found collected a red NYLT water bottle. Please call me at 314-434-5060 to claim and arrange pick up. I would like to thank Tom Kroenung from the STEM team for laser burning the awards.
Inside this package you will find the results and awards for the scouts/scouters from your unit. Please distribute these awards to the deserving individuals. The results will also be posted on the St. Louis Orienteering Club’s website
I am hard at work designing next years course. If you have any ideas on how to improve the festival or would like to help please let me know. Please talk up the festival at your district’s roundtable and encourage all your neighboring units to attend next year.
The date for next year’s 17th John Smerek Memorial Scout Orienteer Festival will be either the March 23 or 30, 2019. I hope to see everyone back again next year.
If your scouts would like to do some additional orienteering the St. Louis Orienteering club puts on a local event each month, with courses for beginner to advanced orienteers. For more information visit their web site at
The GSLAC Map and Compass Committee conducts adult leader training sessions for adults each year. Please check the Council Calendar for the date for the next session.
Yours in Scouting,
David Fisher
