ENGLISH
Prime focus: Techniques of developing the basic skills of reading, writing and speaking among beginners as well as at the advanced level
Participating teachers will be acquainted with tested methods, aids, activities that can be easily and inexpensively applied in class. The key methods will be demonstrated through a sample group of students.
Many of these methods have been devised keeping first generation learners in mind.
RESOURCE PERSONS:
Ms. Ayesha Das
As the Programme Director of the Teachers’ Training Centre, LoretoCollege for several years, Ms. Das has been experimenting with several interesting methods of teaching English at the primary level. She has several books to her credit and has conducted workshops at national level.She has now opened her own reading centre, Read On
Br. Brendan MacCarthaigh
Brendan MacCarthaigh is from SERVE, an NGO committed to eliminating suffering from the Indian classroom. Among other things they have designed Where the child is without fear, a teaching system that is widely popular in Delhi (more than fifty schools) and promoted there by SCERT. It is gathering strength in Kolkata, where at the moment five major city schools are beginning their involvement with it. Brendan works with CINI ASHA and is a teacher both of children and of teachers. He has also designed modules for the bridge course in English.
Ms. Neela Ghosh
A senior teachers’ trainer at the Teachers’ Training Centre, LoretoCollege, Ms. Ghosh has several years of experience in teachers’ training. She is a part of faculty for ICSE Council for in service teachers’ training at the authorized regional office in Kolkata. She has also authored several books.

MATHEMATICS
Prime focus: Arithmetic, geometry, algebra at the middle school level (LCM, GCF, Fraction, Decimal Fraction, Percentage, Ration & Proportion, Geometry of two & three dimensional figures, area & perimeter)
Participating teachers will be oriented on how abstract concepts can be taught with visual support and with concrete objects. The efficacy of the methods will be demonstrated by teaching a sample group of students. All problem areas in middle school mathematics will be taken up for discussion.
In the last session of the workshop participating teachers will prepare work sheets and give presentations based on the methods taught.
RESOURCE PERSONS:
Subir Bhattacharya
A teacher of science and mathematics at the Primary Section of the Kishore Bharati School, Subir Bhattacharya is better known as a teachers’ trainer, who has developed innovative low cost and no cost methods to take off the fear of mathematics from the learner’s psyche. He has a series of low cost books to his credit.
Ruma Pal
A highly innovative teacher of mathematics, she is presently the co-ordinator of Ashirwad, a special school for under priviledged children run by St. Joseph’s School. Through more than ten years of teaching at Ashirwad, Ms. Pal has acquired special skills of teaching first generation learners.
Uday Biswas
Mr. Biswas has conducted several training workshops for teachers on behalf of Science Communicators’ Forum. A teacher by profession, he has also conducted workshops for several other organizations.
Abdul Halim Sheikh
Mr. Sheikh has conducted workshops for organizations like Science Communicators’ Forum, JBNSTS, Amanat Foundation.A member of AIMT, Mr. Sheikh edits the magazine ‘Adhunik Ganit Anwesha’.
** All the above resource persons were hand picked to attend the workshop for teaching mathematics designed by P.K Srinivasan. They, in their turn, have become important teachers’ trainers in West Bengal.

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES
Prime focus: Designed to help the teachers to transact the new EVS curriculum effectively and meaningfully in class, through surveys, activities, simple puppetry, projects, games and slide shows.
RESOURCE PERSONS:
Anshuman Das
At a relatively young age, Mr. Das has carved out a niche as a much sought after trainer and a designer of teaching learning material in the areas of science and environmental education. Presently Anshuman is working with Development Research & Communication Service Centre.
Anshuman has several manuals and activity guides to his credit. He is also an active enthusiast of ‘third theatre’.
Swapna Sen
A painter and puppeteer trained under Raghunath Goswami, Ms. Sen has conducted national level workshops for Centre for Cultural Resources & Training, on use of puppetry in class room teaching. She has also conducted workshops at NID and for trainers with NGOs like Vikramshila and Sahay presently she is teaching in PathaBhavanSchool.
Diti Mukherjee
The CEO and founder member of ASED (Association for Social & Environmental Development), Ms. Mukherjee has for years conducted nature study activities with school and college teachers and students, to sensitize them to their lived environment. The work objective of ASED is biodiversity conservation through public awareness, action research and people’s participation in sustainable development.
Devika Kar
Formerly the education officer at WWF, Ms. Kar is a passionate environmentalist. She has a wide experience of conducting EVS workshops in schools – with teachers as well as students.
Kushal Mukherjee
Founder member and secretary of Prakriti Sansad, Mr. Mukherjee is actively engaged in maintaining an updated database on the flora and fauna of West Bengal and neighbouring states. Prakriti Sansad has conducted several awareness programmes, the most popular of which is the bird watching programme at the Botanical Gardens.

LIFE SKILLS
Prime focus:Appreciating the constraints in transacting the newly formulated Jeevan Shaili Shiksha, the workshop is designed to define the meaning of life skill education & address the problematic aspects of teaching it in a classroom.

Prime focus: Learning environment of the child and psychological aberrations; how to identify and address learning disabilities; health, nutrition & good parenting leading to congenial learning environment

HERITAGE
Prime focus: To initiate teachers to start heritage clubs in schools and to sensitize the children to the heritage of one’s family, neighbourhood, city and country. Although this workshop does not address any course curriculum, it touches upon several key areas in social studies and environmental sciences.
