happylife

happylife are an awesomely tight new four piece rock band from West London. Far from being happy with life they are hungry beyond belief. Kevin (vocals and guitar), Ian (guitar) and Chris (Bass), first got together in 1998, inspired by a common hate of Britpop, a love of harder edged 90's bands such as Alice In Chains and Soundgarden, 80's synth pop, and a large dose of classic artists such as Hendrix, The Jam, The Doors, U2 and the Stones.

In 2000 they named themselves Gunter Swipe and set off for a working holiday in Australia, where they toured the circuit of clubs and bars (that is so notoriously hard to please) for a solid 12 months. In that formative period a songwriting chemistry was born which spawned a plethora of original compositions which they road tested on appreciative audiences Down Under.

At the beginning of 2001 they returned to London, recruited drummer Rupert Mann, renamed themselves happylife (the essence of George Orwell's sinister vision of a future world of voyeurism and state control referred to in his infamous novel '1984') and recorded demos of some of the songs accumulated. By an ironic twist of fate they were then discovered by J. Albert & Son UK, the London branch of the internationally successful Australian publishers who also act as one of the only true UK rock band incubator production companies.

happylife promptly signed their publishing to Alberts, (exclusive publisher of AC/DC's music worldwide), and, utilising the facilities of the company's extensive studio complex in Islington, relentlessly pursued writing songs of such calibre that they soon attracted the attention of producers John Jacobs (The Divine Comedy) and Narada Michael Walden (Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin etc). Inspired by their material, Walden flew to London 'on spec' to produce tracks for happylife.

happylife, who subsequently signed with international management company The Left Bank Organisation, flew to LA for a series of label showcase gigs, culminating in a support slot for Blondie in front of 2,000 hugely appreciative Californians. happylife are amazing to watch live, their instinctively fluid, focussed and emotion drenched onstage performance a massive pleasure to witness.

happylife are a truly great 'organic' rock band whose instinctive feel for melody and musical light and shade is amply demonstrated by the abundance of incredible, soaring, dark, cutting edge songs already under their very talented belts. Their 'from the gut' instinctive approach, coupled with an addiction to dark, dynamic, hard edged melodies, more than amply justifies the massive label interest currently aroused on both sides of the Atlantic.
