Kindergarten Monday Message 2/27/2012

Happy Birthday to Dr. Seuss!

On Friday, we will celebrate Read Across America Day and Dr. Seuss’s birthday. From 10:30-11:30 on Friday morning, we will read Dr. Seuss books and complete several fun activities with the kindergarten through third grade classes. We will also read a Scholastic News about one of our favorite authors, Dr. Seuss. Feel free to enjoy some extra reading time with your child to celebrate Read Across America Day at home too!

Reading

This week, we will read a story in our reading series by Rick Walton called Bunny Day. While reading the story, we will work on the reading comprehension skill of sequence.

Writing

Today, we practiced letter writing. Unfortunately, we will be writing an apology letter to Mr. Sharp for our rude and disrespectful behavior during Music today. The letters will be sent home with your child before Friday for a parent signature. We have discussed respectful and appropriate behavior for Music class with the group. We would appreciate if you also discussed this with your child at home! We are very privileged to have Mr. Sharp as our Music teacher, and hope that our kindergarteners will never show this rude behavior towards him again!!

Popcorn Words and Word Boxes

We have three new popcorn words this week; are, do, that. Most of the kindergarteners brought home Word Box #2 yesterday. They did very well practicing the skill of sounding out words. As they progress through the Word Boxes, they will become more challenging. Thank you for practicing the popcorn word sliders and Word Boxes with your child every night!

Math

Today, we continued Chapter 6: Measurement and Money. Mrs. Nelson will teach her first Math lesson tomorrow on capacity. She is very excited and I am confident she will do great! Also, we started discussing what Leap Year is and how many days are in the month of February this year during the Math Meeting. We will continue to discuss Leap Year throughout the week.
