Thank you!

Thank you for your interest in our bloodhounds. Hansen’sHounds is very careful to match our puppies with the best prospective owner based on a variety of attributes. Each puppy has their own personality and potential; therefore, based on temperament, living conditions, family atmosphere and your goals for your dog, we work with you to make the perfect puppy placement. Our ultimate goal is to place puppies in loving homes who will utilize the value of our breeding program. All of our puppies are professionally evaluated between 7-8 weeks to best determine which will be better suited for trailing and which are better suited as a family pet. We do not want to place a high drive working puppy in a home looking for a laid back companion. First priority is given to working homes (Law Enforcement, Search and Rescue, and hunting). After all, that is what this breed is meant to do!

With that in mind, we need you to complete our Puppy Questionnaire and answer each of the questions. The questions are not meant to be invasive or discouraging, but are meant to help determine if a bloodhound is right for you and/or your family. There are some things prospective owners do not think of that may create issues later on down the road. We do not want to see pups or adults end up in shelters or worse. We invest a lot of money, time and love in our dogs and puppies and do not want to see them moving from home to home or abandoned. The application will also give us an idea on where prospective owners will need pointers and tips for training/raising their puppy. After your questionnaire is completed, you will be placed on a waiting list. Some prospective owners are looking for working dogs, some want a particular gender, and others are looking for particular colors. Please be patient. We breed health certified adults on a limited basis with emphasis on standard, proper size, temperament, drive, and health needed to work. It may take more than one litter to havethe right puppy for your situation.

Once a pregnancy has been confirmed, we will accept deposits for 1st and 2nd picks on males and females. No other deposits will be taken until after pups are born. However, we will pencil people in for males and females ahead of time – many times before a pair is even bred. When the pups are born we will begin contacting suitable homes for the opportunity to put a deposit down to reserve a pup. Working puppies are placed first, then companion puppies are chosen in the order of deposits received. Puppies cannot be chosen until after they are professionally evaluated (7-8 weeks). They will be released to companion homes at 10 weeks. **Hansen's Bloodhounds retains the right to take pick of litter.**

Bloodhounds are not meant for everyone. Please note that bloodhounds are one of the most misunderstood of all breeds. They are very gentle, affectionate, intelligent, companionable in temperament and very responsive to kindness. However, they are also clumsy. A swing of their tail can knock over a toddler, clear a coffee table, and easily destroy valuablesjust walking through the living room. Ashake of a bloodhound's head can slinggoober across a room. If you are a neat freak this is not the breed for you! Bloodhounds are large. We do not breed giant bloodhounds. Mature dogsin our program range in size from 70 to 100 pounds. They require attention to ear cleaning, eye goobers and large appetites. A bloodhound MUST be worked with - socialized and trained. A bloodhound should not be left in a backyard for long periods of time without interaction. A bored bloodhound will likely entertain themselves by digging, chewing, and finding ways to escape. Bloodhounds should be entertained with fun games or training involving their nose. Bloodhounds are intelligent but quite stubborn. Training takes time and consistency but a well-trained and loved bloodhound will make the very best pet and many of our owners will not ever own another breed. They have personalities like no other breed and are sure to provide much love and entertainment for many years.
