General Purpose of the Job: A description of the job’s primary purpose or contribution to the church.

To help children ages 5 through 12 learn about faith in Jesus through experiencing music, engaging God’s word, and leading the congregation in worship and praise while building cross-generational relationships. To provide age appropriate worship arts training. Approximately six hours per week are required to perform the job duties during the program year (October through May) and approximately 20 hours total are required during the off season (June through September).

Essential Duties: A description of the duties and responsibilities that are critical to the successful performance of the job, in order of importance. 1)Provides small group opportunities for children and families with an interest in using and growing musical gifts. 5% of time

2)Grows children’s knowledge of biblical stories and Christian teachings through the use of musical literature including hymnody, popular music, and liturgical music. 10% of time

3)Directs KOTK rehearsal events and is responsible for the group during those events. 20% of time

4)Teaches participants of varying ages and skill levels to become part of a musical ensemble. 5% of time

5)Builds a mindset of worship leadership rather than performance in the hearts of the participants.

6)Coordinates with other leaders (Bell Choir Director, band leaders, etc.) for opportunities for children to learn different instruments and types of music. 5% of time

7)Works with Music Director to determine schedule for program year and opportunities to share music with the congregation. Provides at leastfour opportunities annually for KOTK musical leadership in worship setting. 5% of time

8)Identifies and raises up child leaders with artistic gifts to share in worship leadership at St. John’s.

10% of time

9)Provide two annual opportunities for children to use their musical gifts in service to others (i.e. nursing homes, Hope Center, or other places where musical gifts are shared as an act of service). 5% of time

10)Coordinates volunteers to cover meals, program registration, crowd control, and other needs as they arise.

5% of time

11)Oversees communication of program details to participant families. 5% of time

12)Oversees communication to the congregation regarding events and activities of KOTK. 5% of time

13)Pursues activities as necessary to maintain and grow skills to perform the job such as participating in continuing education opportunities relating to children’s music, church music, etc. 5% of time

The KOTK Music Coordinator is part of the Music and WorshipTeam at St. John’s Church and reports to the Music Director, Organist, Choir Director Position. The position does not supervise any employees directly but will coordinate the work of volunteersthat support the KOTK program.

Skill and Knowledge Requirements: Often referred to as competencies. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty at a fully satisfactory level. List the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the essential duties of the job. Indicate the level of skill and knowledge (ie. basic, strong, advanced, etc.) List any particular licenses or certificates if they are required. Also, list the educational background, degree requirement if any, and/or previous experiences that would typically provide a person with this knowledge, skill, and ability.

  • Strong Christian faith and desire to share that faith with children
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Music or related field, or equivalent experience as a teacher or leading children’s musical ensembles or leading children in musical learning. *Music degree preferable, but a minor in music and some music teaching experiences would be important considerations.
  • Specific experience working with children from Kindergarten to grade 6
  • Demonstrated skills in organization
  • Written communication skills and ability to communicate well with a wide variety of people
  • Must have effective interpersonal, and teamwork skills to interact effectively with supervisor, coordinators, children and their families.
  • Must pass drug screen and criminal record check.

Physical Demands: Describe the physical demands and/or physical work environment characteristics the employee is exposed to in carrying out the essential duties of the job. Include things like lifting, climbing, carrying, bending, stooping, standing, exposure to weather, travel, exposure to loud noise and/or fumes, etc. Also indicate amounts, such as; lifts up to 50 lbs several times a day.

Most work is performed in a small office environment or within the worship space while preparing or leading the musical portions of worship. There is also regular walking from office space to copying room and between rooms for meetings. There are frequent verbal communications with people in person or by telephone and e-mail.

Mental Demands: Describe the mental demands for an employee to carry out the essential duties of the job. Include things like concentration, adherence to strict time deadlines, complex data analysis, stress resulting from critically important or creative duties.

The duties of the position require organizing multiple things at one time and coordinating many people. Creativity and innovation are needed to engage many levels of talent. Ability to give and receive feedback, integrate new ideas, communicate mission and to respond with respect and clarity is necessary. Stress levels can fluctuate with unpredictability of children, coordinating volunteers, listening to and addressing complaints.
